Problems with my first build

Hi guys,

I just built my very first computer. I installed everything, plugged it all in....... and there's no video. I really don't know what could be the problem. Could it be bad parts? I have an Antec p180b case, and there is no internal speaker, so I have no idea if the computer is POSTing or not. Help!

My specs: Gigabyte 965P-DS3 mobo, intel c2d e4400, xfx geforce 8800gts

What brand and wattage of psu? Do you have the psu connected to the video card?

That's what the troubleshooter helps with. You remove the motherboard from the case and if the system start up okay then you know the motherboard was probably shorting out while in the case. A motherboard that is shorting out to the case does exactly what you're seeing.

Did you install standoffs between the case mounting tray and the motherboard?

The little brass things right? They were already installed in the case when I bought it.

Did you make sure that the ones in the case only lined up with the mounting holes on the motherboard? Any stray ones need to be removed.

um, problem: I did everything in that guide and when it came to the part about shorting the jumpers, I put a screwdriver to them, and all I hear is a little electric noise, the fans move a little, and then nothing happens. also, the extra standoffs dont seem to be able to come off the case.

What type of memory do you have installed? Have you tried installing one stick at a time to see if it will boot up?
