Tool Kits
Hey, if I'm working with a case that's labeled "Tooless Design", do I need a PC building tool kit at all??

If your hands are not broken and you can move your fingers, that is all the tools you need.

You still need a screwdriver for putting the motherboard in.
Regardless of whether the case is "tooless" or not I still keep a small screw driver set and needlenose pliers (for setting jumpers on optical drives if necessary) on hand. By no means do you need a huge kit with zillions of tools, just some basic stuff.

Hmm, well can I use a set of demagnitized tweezers instead of needle nose pliers? If so, then I can save $15.
Thanks a lot for the help. Last edited by eul0gy; 06-28-2007 at 01:51 PM. |

That's all I've ever needed, so you should be fine.

Good point about the magnetization. The only magnetically sensitive part is the harddrive, and they're pretty well shielded.

The only thing I used to be careful with around magnets was floppy disks, but I haven't used those in years. Cricket

for their motherboard installation. At the time it stiuck me as odd because I didn't think there were any magnetically sensitive parts on the motherboard. I just googled.. motherboard magnetic screwdriver and came up with the following: http://library.thinkquest.org/21683/...otherboard.htm Excerpt from link above.. 5. Remove the plastic motherboard standoffs and unscrew the motherboard from any metal standoffs. Lift the motherboard off the standoffs. Take care not to use a magnetic screwdriver to unscrew the screws as essential pieces of equipment may be damaged. Here's another site that specializes in advice on building a PC which WARNS NOT TO USE A MAGNETIC SCREWDRIVER for installation of the motherboard. But none of these sites explain exactly why. I'd like to get to the bottom of this one becasue it's been a concern of mine for years. http://www.wikihow.com/Properly-Moun...oard-in-a-Case I think we need an authortative source like a motherboard manufacturer to get an answer on this one. ---pete--- |

I've always used a magnectic screwdriver to screw in the standoff screws.
