Question Help!!!

Hi.

I have a problem with my computer. I just built my first computer, and have encountered a few problems. I can start the computer, and everything seems to run fine. The moniter just stays on standby. I am not sure what this means, whether it is one of the components or what. I have tried the monitor on thevideo card, and on the the motherboard connection! I assume it is the CPU or the Ram maybe????

I have:

2.2GHz CPU 478
333 1GB Ram
ECS 651-M SiS 651 Socket 478
32GB Hard Drive
CD Writer

Everything is connected, and I have doubled checked that, The only other thing is, On the PSU there is a plug, which is the standard 20 pin connect, but it also has another 4 pins. I cannot find a location for this, or I dont know if it even has to be used.

Thanks for any help!

Remove the motherboard from the case and then do this troubleshooter. Let us know what happens.

The 4 pin 12v connector must be plugged in or the computer won't work. If you can't find the 4 pin socket on the motherboard, look in the motherboard manual...it should tell you where it is.

Smile Thanks for your reply!

According to the manual. There is a 20 pin plug, the standard power connecter. And a 4 pin port, the auxillary power connecter for P4's. Coming from the PSU there are many plugs, one that fits the auxillary power, with the right clip etc. and then connect to the standard 20 pin plug, is an extra 4 pins, these are sellotaped to the standard 20 pin plug. On the manual, it does not refer to any other plugs.

I will try the trouble shooter, thanks for your help cricket

So you have two 4 pin 12v power connectors from the power supply? 2 yellow and 2 black wires? Either one can be plugged into the 4 pin connector on the motherboard.

Older motherboards, like the one you're using, require the 20 pin main power connector, plus the 4 pin auxiliary power connector. Newer motherboards require a 24 Pin main power connector, plus the auxiliary. From your description, it sounds like your power supply has the 24-pin main connector, the end 4 pins of which disconnect to allow backwards compatibility with older boards like yours. Just leave these disconnected. You still need to connect the OTHER 4 pin aux connector, though - as you say, this will be the one with the clip that matches, and it will be somewhat seperate from the main 20/24 pin connector.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info!

An update:

I assembled it outside the box, but still the same problem! All fans spin, CD Drive and Hard Drive sound like they are working, but still no activity on the monitor.

What do you think the problem is? CPU or Ram maybe????

Thanks,

Jesse

Did you plug both the 20 pin and the 4 pin power connectors into the motherboard?

What brand power supply are you using?

If anything, I'd suspect the ECS motherboard as being defective before I thought the CPU or the RAM was the problem. ECS is not a good quality brand and their DOA and failure rate is pretty high.

.

Yes, I have plugged in both of te connectors.

I am using a Excel PSU.

So could the motherboard be faulty even though I can use it to turn the computer on???

Is there any way I can test for faulty parts? I dont have access to another system.

I have ordered a diagnostic card of ebay, hopefully tha will be able to help me!

Thanks,

Never heard of that brand before. Good possibility it's a low quality unit and could also be defective. Do you have access to another power supply you can swap in to test with?
