As a rule of thumb I would avoid a $10 psu......not familiar with the brand... but better to upgrade that psu to something better than that one.... there is a sticky on this forum about psu... the good the bad and the ugly.. here is the link: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=101151 .... give it a read for a better psu.

If you're on a budget, don't do SLI. Heck, even if you're NOT on a budget, don't do SLI. It doesn't make sense unless you have tons of $$ to throw at 2 top of the line cards. Anything less and you're better off just getting 1 better card. And 1 8800GTS or GTX will easily handle any game out there for a while.
So, I'd switch to an Asus P5B motherboard. Very stable and reliable. With a C2D, unless you plan on overclocking, you only need 667 speed ram. This'll save you some $$: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...%2bvalueselect And you're right about the e6600 vs the 6700. The 6700 is deffinitely not worth the extra $100. Intel is dropping their prices on the 22nd of the month; you might consider waiting 'till then to purchase.

Learned mostly through watching these forums and reading what people who know more than I do say about things....and I've built 3 machines at this point, so a little experience plays a role :-) But mostly asking lots of questions :-)
Pick the P5B with the features you want. The P5B -E has firewire, the deluxe wifi has onboard wireless networking, etc. You have to use the supplied thermal pad or you void your 3 year warranty. In my experience, it's fine. The motherboard you picked is micro-atx, so it has fewer slots. It also has onboard video, which you don't want....here's the basic p5b: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 You'll notice that the motherboard supports pentium processors; that's why it supports hyperthreading. You're right, C2Ds don't do hyperthreading. |

The -VM has onboard video which you don't need seeing as you have a graphics card.
Get the plain P5B, and make sure you get a retail box not OEM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131030 Also get a SATA burner, not an IDE one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057 Also the thermal paste already placed on the heatsinks from Intel are fine, the retail fans and paste will be fine unless you are planning to do some moderate/heavy overclocking. |

Vista vs. XP is debatable. No doubt your computer will run faster in games and on the desktop with XP. Unless your going with Vista for a specific purpose, I.E DX10 gaming, features etc. XP would be suggested until atleast the first SP1 is released for Vista.
www.zipzoomfly.com, www.mwave.com, www.directron.com to name a few. Ubuntu/Linux could be a good possibility, just make sure you read up, Linux even with wine isn't as global in terms of compatibility and features as XP, or vista. And Mac OS is not available on PC's. I would suggest the Asus P5K board. A Seagate 7200.10 series harddrive, and THIS powersupply. Don't skimp on the PSU. Hyperthreading basically emulated 2 threads or cores on a single core processor. With two cores (core 2 duo) already on the processor, you'll get a better performance advantage anyways. In the future intel does plan to bring hyperthreading back though, just fyi.
