New Build.. Doesn't Work!!
Basic Parts:
AMD Athlon64 3500+ & AMD Fan/HeatSink (new) ABIT AX8 Board (actually bought NIB). Four sticks 256MB RAM (1024MB Total) (used) Biostar GeForce 7300LE Graphics Card (PCI-Ex16) w/128MB On-Board RAM (New) Antec430 Watt TruePower 2.0 Power Supply (New) Assembled Processor, One Stick of RAM and Graphics Card on to board, fitted with Power Supply into Case. Ran Power Test.. Fans (case, PS & CPU) all Spin Up.. LEDs 1 & 2 on board light up, board begins beeping.. a one second beep with two second gap.. POST Code flashed "C.1." twice then went to "0.4." I was told this indicated everything is working, so far.. (I was also told it's suppose to be a single short beep and a third source stated it should be a constant beep.. too many cooks...) I plugged in the monitor, installed the 200 Gig Maxtor Hard Drive (New) and a Maxtor CD Burner (used but known for a fact to work!) Each Drive is set to "Master", each Drive has it's own 39 Pin/80Wire Cable connected to individual IDE Ports (HDD-IDE1, CD-ROM-IDE2.. No IDE0 on this board but there is an IDE3). I even changed the CD to "Slave" and put it and the HDD on one cable to IDE1... Plugged in Power Cord, Turned On switch on Power Supply.. Engaged Power Button on case.. POST Code flashed ".C.1" twice, beeping began (one second beep with two second space) POST code went to ".0.4" again.. I read somewhere that ".0.4" might be a "DRAM" issue (not really knowing if DRAM is the same as the RAM Sticks or not), I exchanged the 256MB Ram Stick with the other three, trying each in turn and in Slots #1 and #3 seperately.. I then individually tried four new One Gig Sticks (all RAM sticks are DDR 400MHz PC3200) that are for another build.. I don't believe I have eight bad sticks of RAM! In the ABIT "Award" POST Code list there is no "4", no "0.4.", etc. So, in addition to not knowing what this means, the computer doesn't work, either.. I also tried three other Power Supplies (the guys on the ABIT forum believe all problems are caused by bad Power Supplies), one of which was out of the working computer I robbed the CD Bruner from.. Theoretically, I need to access the BIOS and set it up, then install the O/S (Win XP Pro) before I can install the Drivers for the Graphics Card and whatever "Drivers" are on the ABIT CD that came with the board.. nothing shows up on the monitor. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what I might do to make this thing work?? Chas. Last edited by DHC120; 07-08-2007 at 01:02 AM. |

If your using 80 wire IDE data cables, the jumpers need to be set to CS(cable select) and not Master/Slave. The correct way to connect the 80 wire is the blue connector to the mobo, the other end(black connector) is the Master position and the middle connector is the Slave position.
Would try and reset the BIOS with the CMOS jumper on the mobo.

I reset the CMOS before firing up the power, and again after it didn't boot.. even removed the battery for about a half hour on a third try. I don't understand why the POST Code will read "0.4." and there is no defintion for this number.. Do you know of a site where POST codes are.. well.. posted? What I need isn't on the ABIT site, nor in my ABIT Users Manual.. Same with "Beep Codes".. according to ABIT, a "Short (Beep) Continuous" is "Power Supply Has a Problem".. Of the three I used, one is brand new (I know, no guarantee that it works) and the other two were pulled from working machines.. all act the same Stuff I've read on the ABIT site tells me their boards are way to "twitchy" for the average home builder.. stuck with it now.. I appreciate the reply and info.. Thanks. Chas. |
