Starting Computer Problem

I hope someone can help me with this problem, because I have no idea what else to do, but RMA some of the items.

I had to re-install XP after failing to get the computer to start normally, under safemode, and under safemode command promt. So it was re-installed again and have had some of the same problems.

My problem is this, I turn the computer off, and go to work or whatever. I come back later and hit the POWER button. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it loads half way and restarts, sometimes it restarts a few times, sometimes it restarts and asks if I want to open normally, in safemode, last best known settings, etc. I have found if I flip the power switch in the back off, let it sit for a few, and flip it back on it usually but not always fixes the problem.

I hope this is enough information, any suggestions to the problem, and do you need anymore information?

Thanks

I assume the pc in question is in the sig? Download memtest86 to a floopy if you have one and test the ram.. If not possible than remove one stick of ram at a time and try booting..

Should I run each stick with the memtest and how long should I run the program to make sure it will detect any errors? Or do I just remove each stick and see it if loads XP?

With memtest run it with 1 stick in the machine each time (to test them both), and run them for about 3 passes, this will be sufficient enough for you to be comfortable that they are fine.

Ok I have tested both sticks with at least 3 passes and have found no errors. Where should I look next for problems with my system? Could it be the HD, Vid card, drivers? Whats the next step?

Open the case and make sure that all power connections are secure and fully inserted into their respective sockets.

You might even want to pull the motherboard from the case to see if the computer will start up everytime or if the same problem persists. If the computer starts up everytime you either have a motherboard to case short somewhere or maybe the power or reset switch is causing the problem.

Depending on when you got that Antec PSU it might be causing the problem too. Do you have another compatible power supply you can swap in to test with?

I got the PSU back in Dec. so not that old, as for everything else all wires have been checked and everything looks good.

I don't have another one that I can swap it out with, so not sure what I can do since I live on Maui.

Also another thing I have noticed is from time to time I think the HD freezes and makes a clicking noise. Could the HD be the problem? How can I check its running smooth?
