New comp and your thoughts
I plan on building a new computer for someone and am using some parts from and their old one (which are):
2 ide drives (dvd burner and dvd-rom) mouse, keyboard, speakers, and monitor i haven't built a system in over a year, and just want to make sure everything is compatible and reliable. I'm buying windows vistas from school (upgrade is $80), and i was thinking of an intel based system costing around $500. the system well be used mainly for internet, music downloads, other basics, and some light gaming(sims 2). I was thinking about this setup: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6420 - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115016 Intel BLKDP965LTCK LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121036 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148230 Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR800D2K2/2GR - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134488 GIGABYTE GV-RX105512P8-RH Radeon X1050 512MB(128MB on Board) GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125056 Antec Basiq BP350 ATX12V Version 2.01 350W Power Supply - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371003 this puts me at 506 shipped from newegg. any thoughts would be thankful |

You can save about $10 by going with some Corsair VS DDR2 667 RAM.

Don't get a video card with Hypermemory. That particular one will steal 384mb of system memory.

To follow up on Blue's comment, this is the cheapest dedicated video card I'd go for:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102078 I'd personally choose something a little more powerful, though, to achieve a more balanced system: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102079

It would help if you got a case
. I would get:$166 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Conroe 1.86GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115015 - You shouldn't notice a difference between the E6320 and the E6420. The 6320 could easily be Overclocked past E6420 speeds with the stock cooler. $75 - ASUS P5L-MX LGA 775 Intel 945G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131041 - With your low budget, I would get a Micro ATX board and spend more on other things. $53 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148230 - Good choice on the Hard Drive. It has PRT which means it should be very fast. $80 - CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 - Corsair is a very respected ram brand. Plus you don't need DDR2 800 unless you are going to do some heavy overclocking. If you really want DDR2 800 Corsair has some thats $3 more after MIR (and it has free shipping), but beware b/c the MIR will void your newegg warranty (and possibly the manufacturer warranty): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 . But then you would also need to get the motherboard that you posted originally or something like this $99 - ASUS P5B-VM SE LGA 775 Intel G965 Express uATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131178 $62 - EVGA 256-P2-N445-LX GeForce 7300GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130025 - Stay away from HyperMemory Video Cards. They steal your ram. If your friend wants to be able to play DX10 games in the future, you could look at an 8500GT. It is in about the same preformance ring as the 7300GT (although it is a bit more pricey). This article (especially the chart) comes in handy for video card comparisons: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/07/...ney/page7.html $37 - FSP Group (Fortron Source) ATX400-PA, version 2.0, SATA, 400W Power Supply - OEM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104952 - This PSU will allow your friend lots more room to for video card upgrade(s) in the future for just a few bucks more when you caculate in shipping (it has more Amps on the 12V rails than the Antec). $21 - Rosewill R6425-P SL Silver SGCC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147072 - Pretty cheap case. If you can afford a nicer one it would probably be a good idea. That comes out to $494 before shippping, OS, and MIR's. Enjoy your build!

I would suggest:
$166 - Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Conroe 1.86GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115015 - Since you have a very limited budget you could go with a Pentium D - $100 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116253 – That would put you at $495 before shipping. I would go with the Pentium D unless you really think you need a Core 2 Duo. $75 - ASUS P5L-MX LGA 775 Intel 945G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131041 $53 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815AS 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148230 - You could get a 250 GB Seagate 7200.10 for $70 if you need more space and can afford it: $70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 $81 - CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 Onboard Video $38 - LITE-ON Black SATA 20X DVD Burner - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106057 $37 - FSP Group (Fortron Source) ATX400-PA, version 2.0, SATA, 400W Power Supply - OEM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104952 - This PSU will allow your friend lots more room to for video card upgrade(s) in the future for just a few bucks more when you caculate in shipping (it has more Amps on the 12V rails than the Antec). $90 - Microsoft Windows XP Home With SP2B 1 Pack – OEM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116056 That comes out to $561 (or $495 if you get the Pentium D) before shipping. That is about the cheapest computer you could build that is still pretty capable. Enjoy your build! EDIT: Links should be working now. Last edited by andper10; 07-15-2007 at 06:26 PM. |
