never built one
I want to build my own computer. I mostly use it for web surfing and my wifes Adobe Pagemaker software.
What should be my first hardware selection in the process? I don't want to spend more than $500.00 total for a desktop build and I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. |

$500 you can do fairly decent PC but adding in the cost of an OS, you will go over.
Spect out a system with good basic parts using on-board video from Newegg and came to $450 and with an OEM XP Home it comes to around $540. May be shipping costs also.

Thanks! I have no idea where to start. Should I pick out a case or a processor first. Now I have a Dell Dimension 2400 that is OK but slower using Adobe Pagemaker. (1024 MB ram) I have an older IBM Thinkpadlaptop running Linux that is OK for surfing the net with a wireless router but I need something Windows XP for Pagemaker. Also wanted to put my current windows XP on the new PC?? All I have is a Dell restore CD but I put it on the laptop OK.

The XP on the Dell restore is basiclly licensed only for the Dell PC. It may load on a different PC but probably wouldn't be able to activate the license with Microsoft. And would be a violation of the XP EULA with the Dell.

OK, what hardware item should I pick out first? I would like to be able to increase the memory later on if I need to.
