Build problem when hdd added

Hi I have assembled my pc and checked to see that it worked after installing the motherboard, ram, and videocard. It powered on and worked fine.

I then installed my sata hard drive and connected it to the pc and ried to power up but the system only turned on for a second and then turned itself off.

The Hard drive is fine, so I'm wondering if the problem is in the power supply unit itself or just the sata connections for the hard drive? I want to know so that I might be able to buy the 4 pin to sata adapters instead of waiting a week or two to return it and get a replacement.

I have a 430 watt thermaltake powersupply, seagate 320 gb hard drive, machspeed msnv-939 motherboard, amd sempron cpu,

If the hd is fine then why is your question concerning the hd? What type of problems are you having? Have you tried the out of the case build yet?

Does it still power on with the HD removed? Sounds like a PS if the little additional load of a HD will keep it from booting...

Parts etc

My question doesn't concern the hdd, it concerns the PSU.

Case: TC3J-4048 :: Power Up Black 2559 ATX Mid-Tower Case with Front USB, Audio Ports and 250mm Side Fan

PSU: t T925-2060 :: Thermaltake / PurePower / 430-Watt / ATX / Dual 80mm LED Fan / 20/24-Pin / SATA Ready / PCI-E Ready / Power Supply

Mobo: MBM-MSNV-4000A :: MachSpeed MSNV-939 NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.40GHz OEM Processor

Ram: ULT31664 :: Ultra 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Memory

Video Card: D10-2048 :: Diamond Stealth Radeon 9250 / 256MB DDR / PCI / DVI / TV-Out / Video Card

HDD: TSD-320AS :: Seagate / 320GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-300 / OEM / Hard Drive

DVD: L49-GSAH50L CA :: LG SuperMulti GSA-H50L DVD Writer -18x DVD±R Burn, 16x DVD±R Read, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 10x DVD±R DL, 48x32x CD-R/RW, Black, Lightscribe (Not yet Added)

I have not yet tried the out of case build yet although I have put the computer together from scratch on two separate occasions.

The computer powers on fine with the hdd removed.
when the hdd drive is connected the system powers on for half a second then turns off (fans spin, leds light up, but no display).

all power and data connections have been checked and are secure

any help is greatly appreciated

Is this a brand new build?

Does the build power up if you just connect the optical drive(s) without the HDD?

Did you try using different SATA ports for the HDD?

Yes, the power could be the problem...but it might also be the motherboard. MachSpeed isn't a very good brand...I think it's made by PC Chips.

the build is brand new

I haven't had a chance to connect the optical drive since I haven't received it yet.

I will try changing the sata port and tell you how it goes.

Here's hoping it's not the motherboard

I changed the sata data connection to the motherboard and the pc booted up properly.

I don't know if this is weird or not but i connected the sata cable to sata port 2 and it registered on the post screen as being connected to sata port 3. (just in case anyone finds it interesting)

Thanks for all the help from everybody....................especially cricket
