Troubleshooting: Power? No power?
CPU: Intel Core Duo 2
PSU: FSP Group Inc., ATX-350PA, 350W Mobo: ASUS PSL-VM1394 (Integrated graphics/sound) Case: Rosewill RS04-P-SL RAM: 1GB Corsair DDR2 (2 of 'em) The light on the motherboard comes on when I turn on the PSU, but when I push the power switch on the front, nothing happens. I try shorting those two switch connector pins, that doesn't do anything either. I tried the troubleshooting method in the sticky, and I got the CPU fan to turn on, but that's it; still no signal. Any idea what's going on here? Try this, http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=168456. MB must be removed from the case.. Make sure you have the 20+4 pin connected to the mb...

I tried it, and I got the CPU fan to turn on, but that's it; still no signal, unfortunately.

Two sticks of 1 GB Corsair DDR2 RAM. I'll try one at a time, like you suggested, in a bit.

Well, I was going to wait for a VGA gender changer to continue on, but eBay's "cable_expert" got some questionable ratings for shipping times, so... I'm not waiting for that. I need to get this figured out before the warranty on these components expire.
Okay, I've tested out the RAM, and I don't think that's the problem. I've tried each in the first slot, individually, and neither made it work. I tried both in A1 and A2, and both in A1 and B1, and that didn't fix it, either. I just can't get the BIOS to show up. I can get the CPU fan to start up, but nothing more. Do you still have the motherboard out of the case? Do you have any drives connected now?
Do you have both power connectors fully inserted into the sockets on the motherboard? They don't look fully inserted in your pictures. Why do you need a "gender bender" VGA cable? Cricket

Yeah, it's still out of the case. It will be until I get this problem solved. And no, there are no drives connected at the moment. They're not needed yet, right?
Yeah, the power connectors are fully connected. Seems like if they weren't, the CPU fan wouldn't be powered... I have the 20-pin main power cable and the other 4-pin one, as well as the... wait a minute. I don't need the ATX power... *unplugs* See, I have one monitor and two PCs, the one I'm using now and the one I'm troubleshooting. I got a KVM switch from eBay (so I wouldn't have to constantly be switching VGA plugs) and the cords needed, but I didn't notice when I ordered the two cords that they were M-F, not M-M like I needed. So I ordered two gender changers like four days ago, and they haven't even shipped yet. So forget that. What a pain. XD EDIT: Oh, they came today. I was never notified that it was shipped... Oh well. At least it got here quickly. Last edited by YAOMTC; 07-25-2007 at 12:08 PM. |

Correct, keep the drives unplugged 'till after we get something to show up on the screen.
You need the big 24 pin connector (Is yours 20 or 24 pin??), and another 4 pin (or is it 8 now?) connector that goes on the top left by the CPU. Until we get video, connect the keyboard, mouse and monitor directly to the motherboard. Better to eliminate the KVM switch as a possible problem.

Well, the main reason I got the KVM switch is to make it so I don't have to switch the cable back and forth, the cable that just happens to be the most difficult type of cable I know of. I'm currently running this PC through the KVM switch, and it works fine. A tiny bit blurry, as I have a 9V AC adapter for it (the switch doubles as a signal booster!) instead of the needed 9V DC adapter. But hey, the picture is only slightly blurrier than usual.
And my mouse and keyboard go directly to the PC, not through the KVM switch. And the problem started before I even ever got the KVM switch delivered, so that couldn't possibly be the problem. Right? Oh, and I forgot to mention: I didn't have the keyboard connected. Could that somehow possibly be the cause? Seems doubtful. (It's connected now, so now I'm testing it again anyway.) EDIT: Nope, still nothing. Last edited by YAOMTC; 07-25-2007 at 12:39 PM. |

sorry, off topic, but I'm gunna build my new rig soon, how often do you run into problems like these? I'm somewhat nervous I'll spend alot of money on my new parts and won't be able to get them to work..

Well, it's kind of a 24-pin power supply plug, but it's split into a 20-pin and a 4-pin plug (held fairly close together with a zip-tie), that go together into the 24-pin port. There's also another 4-pin plug, on its own, coming from the PSU, which seems to go over to a port labeled "ATX12V". I guess I need that, too...?
But plugged in or not plugged in, that one seems to make no difference. |

Should I seek some more help offline? I know someone who could look at it.

You still have the motherboard out of the case. Problem is still the same even when jumping the 2 PWR ON pins. You tried the sticks of RAM one at a time...problem still the same.
Have you tried a different power supply yet? The problem is either the power supply or the motherboard. Try another working power supply and if the problem remains it's probably a bad motherboard. Cricket
