Cool 1st time builder

I've never built a computer before, and I have 600 Dollars to use. The whole purpose of me building a computer is to have an above store quality computer, and to learn the basics of building computers. One of my biggest problems is that I live in the country, and I want as high speed of a connection as possible. We have Dish Network if that helps. I want it to be good enough to run the most modern games without problems, and to be able to handle current audio and video programs. I have heard that windows is not the best OS out there, and I just need to be able to use basic office software. That is what I need, and I'm wondering what the best parts for my money are, and also what parts are the most important.

Thanks

For $600 you can build a nice basic computer for basic computing uses, but it won't be able to play the latest games with ease. For that you need to spend at least $1000 but that still won't get you a true gaming rig...it'll be decent for current high end games but may struggle with games that haven't been released yet.

Do you have a preference...AMD or INTEL? Or will you leave that choice up to us?

And will the $600 have to cover the monitor, OS, keyboard, mouse and speakers too or only the box?
