New build won’t boot windows

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key

My first build is giving me some problems. It is an Intel DG965WH . My new HHD is a SATA. My new DVD-RW is a SATA. I can get into the BIOS and it appears to recognize the HHD and then DVD-RW. Under the bios heading “BOOT” I have 2 options for “Boot type menu”, normal and advanced. Under normal it sets the DVD as the first boot device. Under “Advanced” it sets the HHD as the first boot device. When I try to set the boot device priority in either “Normal or Advanced” it will not save my change.
I have checked all the connections and they seem fine. I have added the floppy and removed it. Tried to change boot sequence without any luck. I have changed to another HHD with no luck or change. I am wondering if my CD
(Microsoft Windows XP Professional - ISO CD / No Activation Required) that I got from a friend doesn’t want to boot. It seems to load fine on my laptop which already has an OS on it. I have downloaded from Microsoft, the file to create bootable floppies. I can hear my floppy spinning when I try to boot with the floppies. I can hear my DVD spinning with the CD in it when I try to boot from CD. I don’t seem to be able to get by the error message. I have googled this and still nothing that seems to provide any enlightenment. Any suggestions? Thanks

It sounds like your friend had a spare cracked copy of XP .
I would buy a genuine one or download a Linux Distro like Ubuntu to use if you don't want to spend the cash.

Thanks Pam123
I think you are correct about the cracked copy of xp. I have no problem buying a new copy if I can be sure that is the problem. I just don't want to buy it and have the same error message and less cash in my pocket. You mention"or download a Linux Distro like Ubuntu " . I will look into this as I don't know what it is. Thanks CBB

Ubuntu is the new "home" version of Linux that Dell is now selling on it's desktops and laptops.
Download and burn an ISO disks and try it for free.
If it installs you know your problem isn't hardware.

Thanks Pam123
I have my errors down to "No bootable device -- insert boot disc and press any key" so your initial thought about my cd is looking like the problem. I will see what I can do with Ubuntu and see if that narrows it right down. CBB
