Problem building a computer
It's my first build, here are the specs
CPU: intel e6850 (dual core, 3.0ghz) Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 Graphics Card: GIGABYTE GV-NX86S256H GeForce 8600GTS 256MB Power Supply:APEVIA ICEBERG ATX-IB680W-BL ATX12V / EPS12V 680W Power Supply Ram: Patriot eXtreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (x2, 4 gb total) OS: Vista Premium 32bit DVD burner: LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with 12X DVD-RAM write and LightScribe Technology Black E-IDE On another forum they said I forgot the motherboard spacers (I did) but they said it probably should still work. Well all of the lights turn on and the power button works but nothing else seems to be working. Nothing is displayed on the monitor and the dvd drive will not open. What are some steps I can take to find out what the problem is or do you think the motherboard is fried and I need to send it back? My old build is like P4 2.4ghz, 512 ram (533), onboard sound/video, belkin n1 (no reason why), like 4 250gb hard drives (again no idea why), and I'm not sure what else. I've been looking forward to my new computer for a while because it should run like thousands of times faster! (that is an obvious overstatment) Last edited by machinesheart; 07-26-2007 at 09:42 AM. |

Follow the troubleshooting instructions found here. You must remove the motherboard from the case when doing this...you're trying to determine if your motherboard is shorting/grounding out to the mounting tray or not. Let us know what happens.
You must install the standoffs under the motherboard. If you install the motherboard directly to the mounting tray there is a chance that the motherboard will get fried if the wrong spot of the motherboard touches the metal of the mounting tray. When you remove the motherboard from the case check the underside for scorched marks. If you find any the motherboard is probably toast. And you might want to replace that Apevia power supply...they're rubbish. Cricket

Meh... mine hasn't melted on the like 15 times I've tried to run it
Anyways I tested and guess what? Cpu fans are go as always but still no picture! I'm guessing (correct me if I'm wrong) but I think it may be the graphics card because I couldn't find any scorch mark. But that still doesnt explain why the DVD drive will not open. Or does it have to get to the bios before it can even open? |

Is the motherboard out of the case?
If it is, the troubleshooting steps say you only assemble the motherboard, CPU, heatsink, video card, 1 stick of RAM, monitor and power supply. You shouldn't have any drives or unecessary expansion cards installed...you want to work with only the core components to see if any of them are causing the problem. With everything hooked up you'll have a really hard time trying to figure out the cause of the problem. A defective device can keep a computer from booting up. And just trying to boot up isn't going to put max load on the power supply so of course it didn't melt. It's when they were testing at full load that the Apevia started to melt. Cricket

try hooking up another 4 pin power molex to the dvd. make sure the ram is in the correct slot seeing that its 533mhz it should be in the ddr2 slots. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...board+-+Retail
is there any beeps when you turn it on? try taking some ram out. make sure all the power is connected to everything, including the video card. |

The new ram for my computer is ddr2 800...
But I just realized: This ram was not on the ram supported list for my motherboard because I couldn't afford any of the ones that went with my mobo. Could this be the problem? My videocard doesn't have a power slot... I've tried all of my 4-pin connectors and none of them make it work Do you think that my DVD drive is IDE is the problem? well the video card you specified in your list does have a power slot and comes with an adapter for your 4 pin molex power. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...+Card+-+Retail
yeah that would definetly be a problem if the ram isnt supported then it prob will not work. about the ide cable, no you should be able to plug the power in without the ide cable and it should open up for you. is the dvd drive bran new. does any of the 4 pin molex make the hard drive run. you should be able to hear it when you turn it on. |

Weird, my DVD drive opens when it isnt plugged in to the mobo and when it is it won't open...
I looked all over my gfx card and I can't find any place to hook up a power cable even if I had one... |

I'm not sure what's wrong with my computer. Is it possible for me to send back the mobo, the dvd drive, and the graphics card back to newegg for replacements, because I have no idea which part isnt working and I have no way of telling either.

If you're not getting POST with just the bare minimum parts assembled my guess is the motherboard is defective...but, given Apevia's reputation I would try another working compatible power supply before I did anything else.

so you think I should just return the mobo and it has nothing to do with my graphics?
And I don't have another good power supply that I can use... Last edited by machinesheart; 07-26-2007 at 02:01 PM. |

How much do you think that would cost? Like an average? I think my rents said they would pay for the repair (I'm only 15 you know).

Heh it's ok. Me, my dad, and my uncle all think it's the mobo and we are sending it back tommarow.

Yea from the looks of it, its the mobo. I had a similar problem with an ASUS P5N-E SLI board. It shorted out the first time Booted it up and all it did was run all the fans and the LED's. For the $1,500 I spent on the rig I figured that isn't acceptable that my new computer is a nice nightlight and fan so I sent back the mobo. Of course after the replacment I was fine. Remember, use the little brass things that keep the mobo from shorting out. It was a rather dumb move on my part =]
Bottom line, return the mobo ---> enjoy computer. Good Luck! Tom =] |
