First Build - suggestions please.
Hey guys in a couple of weeks I hope to build a new computer from scratch and this will be my first ever computer built. What I wanted was suggestions on the list of components I've put together as being my first time I know nothing about brand/quality anyway here is the list of components I have so far:
Case: Coolermaster Centurion 5 http://www.tastech.co.nz/details/101282.htm PSU: ThermalTake PurePower W0084RA 430w ATX Power Supply http://www.tastech.co.nz/details/102440.htm Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 Motherboard http://www.tastech.co.nz/details/102573.htm CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Dual Core Processor Socket AM2 Windsor 2 http://www.supercheappc.co.nz/site/p...roducts_id=126 Heatsink/Fan: Zalman CNPS9500 AM2 CPU Cooler http://www.tastech.co.nz/details/101739.htm HDD: Western Digital 160GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive http://www.supercheappc.co.nz/site/p...oducts_id=1515 RAM: Transcend 1Gb 240Pin DDR2 800 Mhz RAM http://www.supercheappc.co.nz/site/p...522e0d1e546047 Note: I intend to upgrade the RAM to 2GB (2x 1GB) as soon as I get some more money. DVD Drive: Pioneer DVR-112D DVD±RW DRIVE IDE 18X DVD±R DL http://www.supercheappc.co.nz/site/p...oducts_id=1990 Graphics Card: eVGA GeForce 8600GT 256mb HDCP PCI-E Graphics card http://www.supercheappc.co.nz/site/p...oducts_id=2091 OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32 Bit DVD (OEM) http://www.tastech.co.nz/details/101631.htm I intend to use the computer mainly for gaming (games around oblivion spec level), music and internet surfing just basic use really + some minor graphics design work. I also wish it to be easily upgradable as I'll be getting a much better job next year and will have more money to put into it, at the moment I'm on a strict budget (the current list is around $1100 NZD which is probably my upper limit) I have done some research into the components (mainly looking at review scores on newegg.com) my main concern is whether they'll be compatible together and with vista however I'm open to suggestions since I don't have much experience in this matter Side question: On the motherboard manufacturers website (gigabyte) it says that the GA-M61P-S3 only supports the 4400+ CPU from revision 2 now does this mean I need a revision 1 CPU in order to update the BIOS to revision 2 or can I just use the 4400+ CPU and update the BIOS with it not being recognised? ...whoa sorry for the long read too

The BIOS is probably the latest if the board was made fairly recently, so using the 4400 will probably work. Would check Gigabyte again to see when they released version 2, if more than a year ago, your probably good.
Would drop the Zalman HSU and use the money for the extra ram. The stock heatsink will be enough unless you do heavy OCing. And using an aftermarket HSU can void the warranty on a CPU.
