New build check- sub$1000 gamer
I was fortunate enough to get backed into at a stoplight and desperately need a computer for online classes- the eMachines has caused too much trouble... so..... the insurance check will go into this:
The whole thing will have to be $1000 or less. Mostly used for internet, video making, music and some mid-range gaming. I plan on doing some light overclocking as a beginner so I think there's room. I would also appreciate recommendations on a good video card for $100 or less. Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Black Aluminum http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811119068 MB: Asus P5W DH Deluxe http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131025 PSU: Enermax noisetakerII - 420W http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817194012 CPU: C2D E6420 2.13Ghz http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115016 Memory: Corsair XMSII 2GB DDR2-800 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820145590 HDD: WD Caviar 250GB SATA3 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822144701 Optical: Lite-on DVD burner http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106070 OS: Windows XP Pro OEM http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16832116059 Total for above: $850.94 |

Are you planning on buying a video card? Also I would get the non sli version and save some money because sli is not cost effective and it is cheaper to just use one video card and just upgrade when its time instead of buying two.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116196 e6550 (use with the p5k mobo) cost 4 bucks, less a bit faster, bigger fsb, i think better overclocking too.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...5030&Tpk=E6550 Last edited by marine63; 07-31-2007 at 08:17 AM. |

I don't think I want Vista just yet.
Any second opinions or comments about the P5K and E6550 setup? I'm buying this very soon. |

The P5K is an updated P5B. It has the newer chipset which makes it more future proof for the next line of intel chips. From everything I hear so far it kept all the good in the P5B and made it even better so if you can aford the extra cost it will make your system more upgradeable.
As for the new C2D line-up I dont think you can go wrong. The 6420 is a great PSU. Have not heard anything bad about the 6550, and it should be a bit faster, but it is still very new. I would just recommend you go as high as the budget will allow. The older processors seem to be a bit more expensive right now likely because they paid more for them and dont want to eat the cost. In a few weeks I expect the price line-up will start favoring the 6420 with lower prices as old stock is moved out. If you are not OCing the system you can also save some money and get Corsair Value Select 677 ram. The CPU will step your speed down to that level so you dont really need faster ram unless you are OCing the system. Kat Edit: got rid of my concern about your PSU, it shows up on the good list so you should be good to go. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 Last edited by Katreat; 07-31-2007 at 05:27 PM. |

I will definitely be OCing at some point in the future when I upgrade this build to a high-end...bigger PSU and 8800 series video card. thanks for the input!
Total comes to $940 altogether! Last edited by xraycatj; 07-31-2007 at 06:46 PM. |

I've never played any games on DX9 yet (or even with a video card) so I'm sure I'll be blown away. I'm upgrading from a 1660Mhz Athlon XP CPU, onboard video, 100Mhz RAM...you get the idea...this is gonna be fun.

whoa, the price of the corsair XMS 5-5-5-15 went up almost 200%....and the 4-4-4-12 went way down! Looks like I'm getting the 4-4-4-12!
also I switched the PSU to an Enermax Liberty 500W, settled for Windows XP home, and upgraded the CPU to the E6750 2.66Ghz. Price is almost the same. |

Order placed! Here's the final list:

Is it recommended to use the provided heatsink thermal pad during the warranty period or clean it off and use the Arctic Silver 5 2. There's a bios update at the ASUS website for the P5K. Will the board ship with the latest bios or will I need to flash? 3. Will I need a floppy drive? Last edited by xraycatj; 08-07-2007 at 01:33 PM. |

1. It is best just to use the stock heatsink/thermal compound. There is no need to replace it, it will cool fine. Also, I believe it will void the warranty.
2. You can check when you get the board. You may need to flash depending on how long ago the update was released. 3. Unless you are installing RAID drivers or you use floppy drives. |

1. You must use the supplied heatsink and thermal paste to preserve the 3 year warranty, and for a non overclocked system it is just fine.

Cool! Follow these steps to do an initial test of core components before you go through the hassle of installing it all in the case: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=168456
Be aware that the intel heatsink is really hard to put in; don't worry about pushing quite hard, the motherboard will bend but won't break. |

Glad it's working. Getting it right on the first try is pretty unusual, congrats!
Just make sure your temperatures are in the 30-40 degree C range, to be sure the heatsink went on right, and you're golden. (CoreTemp is a good monitoring program). |

With orthos running after about ten minutes the CPU temp tops out at 40C. I guess I got the heatsink on fine then; I wasn't sure I got it down tight.
EDIT: according to ASUS Q FAN...not sure how accurate that one is. The latest BIOS update was to correct the temp reading. Last edited by xraycatj; 08-11-2007 at 08:30 PM. |

Ok. Compare it to CoreTemp which used to be far more accurate (the BIOS upgrade may have fixed the issue). You're in great shape though; ASUS used to overstate the temperature by almost 10-20 degrees, if it's still inaccurate, your temperature is actually very low. 40 under full load sounds good.
