Can you tell us the brand and model of all components, including the powersupply?

When in doubt, suspect the power supply. If you pull out your power supply and connect a paper clip between the green and black wires on the 24 pin connector, it should fire up. If it doesn't, try connecting a couple disk drives to it and try again. If it still doesn't, you have a dead power supply.

Try the troubleshooting thread I linked to. You MUST take the motherboard out of the case to eliminate possible grounding issues.

cheers guys for the help, i have tried the paper clip test with the power suply and all works fine. i have also connected the power to the dvd drives and all works fine. however when i attach the data ribbon to the dvd drives and then to the motherboard and switch on, the dvd drives dont work?? is this becuase the motherboard cant boot up properly?

i have run through the link you sent me and all fires up ok but the monitor says no signal?
could the monitor be damaged as it is the only part that isnt new.

Ok, so with the motherboard out of the case, and nothing connected except cpu, graphics, and 1 stick of ram, you can power on but get no signal on the monitor? Do you have the power cable connected to the video card? And the additional 12V connector by the CPU?

If all of the above is true and you still get no signal, remove the graphics card from the motherboard and boot up. The board should beep (you may need to connect your case's "Speaker" wire to the relevant motherboard pins).

If it doesn't beep, is there another Powersupply you can use to test?

yep, i have taken the board out of the case, connected the 24 pin power, the 4 pin power and the 8 pin power conectors. slotted the card in, connected the 6 pin pci-e power to card.
all spins up but monitor comes up with no signal through the dvi cable. for some odd reason my vga cable doesnt fit any of the ports on the motherboard so cant try that.

i have booted up with out the graphics card in and the audio from the case attached and it makes no noise. however when the graphics card is in but not connected by the 6 pin power connector alarm bells go off.

By '4 pin power' do you mean the Molex connector on the motherbaord (white plastic with 4 pins in a row)? I don't think you need it unless you're doing SLI; try unplugging it.

Your board doesn't have onboard video, does it? And the 8800GTS graphics card only has DVI ports (although yours should have come with a VGA to DVI adapter).

I would look about another ATX 2 compatible powersupply to test. If there's one you can borrow, that would be good, or see about an Antec SmartPower or something from FSP (Fortron).

ive just tried my old power supply with it an the same problem occurs.
ive tried it with the 4 pin molex disconnected too and no difference.
also the vga cable fits on the dvi adapter on the card but then doesnt fit on the monitor. (wrong plug end)

have just had a nosy in the motherboard manual and apparantly the board doesnt have a vga port, just a serial port???

also when i first set up the computer i connected my old sata hd not knowing that it wouldnt read it. do u think this has anything to do with the problems im having? i have since got a new sata 2 drive but no luck with that either.

my motherboard has no vga port. what is the reason behind this? is it because they presume u will be buying a graphics card if u buy this board?

Where does this go? I've looked thru the MB manual (EVGA nForce 680i SLI) as well as the case instructions (Cooler Master Centurion 5) and neither explains where the speaker wire connects to the MB.

Your motherboard may have a on-board piezo speaker already...it's a small black cylindrical object with a small hole on the top. Might be near the edge of the motherboard by the last PCI slot.
