What to buy

I'm building my first computer and I'd like to get some diferent opinions about something. I think the most important thing for me to know is what is the most important item to buy. What I mean is, what should I invest the most in. Is a good hard drive what affects performance most, or is it the motherboard. I realize opinions will be diferent, but I'd like to get an idea.

Depending on the use of the machine will help determine where to spend the money.
For a gamer, the video card is the most important then the right CPU to match up to the video card. Then in no real order, the amount of ram, good quailty mobo, a good quailty PSU strong enough for the video card. The hard drive would be low on the list of performance but a good quailty HD can inhance performance. The Seagate 7200.10 SATA will give the best performance outside the high priced, high RPM jobs.

I agree with flanzig's rating. If you post a budget and proposed use for the computer, we can help come up with a balanced list of parts. (There's no point putting a killer processor in with a slow video card and flaky ram, for instance).
