Unhappy First Time New Build Disappointment!

My son and I decided to build a pc for him to game and render 3d graphics on, as a learning experience. (Learning for us, lucky for him, he gets to keep the computer.) After much shopping to find the best prices, we acquired the following components: Antec 900 case, eVGA 680i SLI A1 mobo, eVGA 8800 GTS 640mb DDR3, Antec Truepower Trio 650 watt power supply, Zalman 9700 LED heatsink and fan combo, Intel Q6600 processor, (4) Ballistix DDR2 800/PC2 6400 1gb sticks, Western Digital Caviar SE 16 750gb SATA HDD, and a Lite-On LH20A1H DVD Drive. We worked on a wooden table, and wore anti-static wristbands to protect our components. When we turned it on for the first time, the fans wouldn't turn on, so we immediately shut it off and unplugged the power cable. Can someone give us some advice on where to go from here?

Our mistake, read Hal9000 procedure

Just saw Hal9000 procedure. We will give that a try. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Yes, I think the fans are hooke up properly. I didn't give it a chance to boot, I was too scared I would fry the motherboard. When it was turned on, the power LED came on, but nothing else did. I don't know if I should leave it on a little longer, or just do what Hal9000 said and test a minimal system outside the case. Thanks for the help

does the computer start up? Do you get a display? Are the fans the only thing not working? If so, check to see if they are plugged in.

Experienced Person Correct Me If Wrong:
Is there soemthing in the BIOS that could be disabling the fans? Or have the speed set to 0?

well the minimal test is the best option

No you cannot disable the fans from the BIOS, altough on some new mobos you can increase/decrease the cpu fan speed, you could also use a fan controller if you dont have that option

Prior to initial trial boot, we rechecked all mobo and power supply connections to all components. We're sure all devices are hooked up and seated. (Perhaps not correctly, but we think so after reading and re-reading and cross referencing all manuals) My lay opinion is grounding or shorting out may be the cause. We are just gun shy the first time out with all this expensive stuff.

Have you tried the minimal build yet, at least that would check out your core components. If it is just fans not comming on you might try connecting them directly to the PSU, get the fan controler and MB out of the loop and see if they run.

Ok, this is funny. We were so scared we would break it, we didn't turn it on right. We turned on the psu, but nothing else. My son pushed the power button on the case and it worked. I now have a new problem: my monitor isn't working. When I turn on the computer, it beeps one long beep. The monitor says check cables. I reconfigured the cables every possible way, can someone help us?

what monitor do you have? is it connected through DVI or VGA? VGA is the blue one.

if the MB has onboard video and you have a graphics card too, try both places you can attach the monitor, then configure bios if you need to change which one should be enabled.

Did you try the out of case procedure with minimal parts? You've really got to do that.

We were getting ready to pull everything apart and thought we would call support one more time. EVGA support suggested rechecking the connections and re-setting the graphics card or doing the out of case test, both of which were advised by previous posts on this thread. They said the one beep was indicative of a lack of power to the graphics card. After doing the reset of the GPU and checking power one more time, WE ARE UP AND RUNNING!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all of your help, you guys really know what your doing.
