Building My First Computer

Hey Everyone.

I am building a new computer and would like some help in just making sure my parts are all compatible. I am new at this so any tips/tricks you have would be greatly appreciated.

Case: Thermaltake Matrix VX Black Aluminum ATX
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...&sku=T925-2206

PSU: Ultra X-Finity 600W http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...u=ULT31849%20K

***** New PSU
Corsair HX520
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...acture=CORSAIR

Mobo: XFX nForce 650i Ultra NVIDA Socket 775 ATX Motherboardhttp://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3109401&sku=P450-9106

****New MOBO EVGA Nforce 680i
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...798&CatId=2541

CPU: Intel Core Due E6750 2.66GHZ Processor http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...=CP1-DUO-E6750

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 500GB
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...sku=TSD-500AS2

Not to sure on what i need for a hard drive. size is fine but for that MOBO it says i need a UDMA/133. But it also has SATA headers. So i think i can use the HD i selected but not sure.

Total $1400 Give or take

Now what i plan to use my system for is everything, Autocad, Demanding Gaming, etc. I would like it to be upgradeable. 2GB of ram is fine for now. The motherboard I am iffish on because i dont have many PCI slots. I found that one because it has the 16x PCI slot that i need for the vid card. If you know of a better one then let me know.
I do plan to overclock it, and need to get many fans to keep it cool. I dont really care about the noise as my music is usually playing. If i have left anything out let me know and ill fix it. Also if you suggest something, dont worry about the price, just suggest it. I dont mind paying extra for quality but i also keep it within reason.

I have a couple of suggestions.

First, Ultra power supplies are poor quality. Take a look at this thread for lots of information on power: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Second, we recommend Asus motherboards. They are very high quality. Check out the Asus P5K boards.

Lastly, take a look at www.ncix.com for components as well.

One thought about OCing, I feel it should only be done on a gaming rig. A PC that is doing audio/video coding or Autocad should run at stock speeds for stability and non corruption of data.
Would look to the EVGA brand of Nvidia cards, the XFX cards have been not so good.

i would get a new SATA DVD burner drive pretty cheap and better than IDE. the 7600GT may struggle on some of the things you plan to use the comp for, may think as previously suggested for a higher NVIDIA geforce card.

do you really need the 5 USB PCI card? most modern motherboards have 4 on the back, 2 on the front (if your case supports) and usually 3 USB headers which can support up to anoter 6 USB ports. you can easilly set yourself up with 10+ USB ports without using one of your PCI slots at all.

look at a corsair 520W HX power supply, very stable unit.

and the p5k or p5b would be good motherboards from asus.

Go with an eVga GeForce 8600GT, not the XFX, the eVga is much better quality.

For the OS, make sure you get the OEM System builders, not retail.

Don't get an SLI board, your not going to be using SLI, and so its a waste of money, as Alaron said, we highly recommend the ASUS P5K and P5B boards.

go with a lite-on optical drive, samsuns are iffy. You can get a CD/DVD burner with lightscribe for $40

I'd also go with Corsair RAM

sorry for all the comments. Thats just what I would change from others recommendations here.

Chaz =)

Just wondering, have you ever thought of using Newegg? Their shipping is much faster than tigerdirect, and on alot of things they are cheaper. For example your Lite-on optical drive is only $39.99 on Newegg where it is $50 on Tigerdirect.

Other than that, looks good. I don't know about the eVga motherboard though.

Unfortunately Newegg does not ship to Canada. The best options for Canadians are Ncix.com and TigerDirect.ca.

Your list is solid. I just have a couple of suggestions.

Your motherboard is overkill. There is no reason to buy an SLI board if you aren't going to use it. It is much more economical to buy one video card and upgrade it later then to add a second card for SLI. By the time you are ready to add the SLI card, there are single card options out there that will beat your cards in SLI. It has happened with the last few generations of SLI cards. Something to think about. The Asus P5K is a great board.

Also, swap out for this optical drive, it will come with burning software. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...683&CatId=1624

Oh thats a bummer, newegg is the best ive used. He really seems to like that SLI board, everyone has recommended the P5k and, he doesn't want to change it.

The problem is that SLI is Sexy. Read any gaming magazine, if you want to game you need to have an SLI board............. Most people I personally know with an SLI board are still running one card........ go figure.
