Can I save any money here?
Can i change any of these parts to save money, but not lose performance?

What do you want this computer to do well? Gaming, graphics design, just web browsing?
Also, links to the newegg pages for the parts would make it a lot easier for us to quickly check how much some of your parts are, so as to offer alternatives. My initial advice would be to drop SLI. It's only worth it if you can afford 2 of the best video cards right now. Otherwise, it's just a more expensive motherboard and powersupply. Also, adding a second card down the road as an upgrade option doesn't make much sense b/c 1 next generation card always outperforms 2 last-gen cards in sli (I didn't realize this until after I did my build. If I did an upgrade today, it would be to get an 8800, not a second 7800 :-)

Based on all that, you can save money but not getting such a ridiculous card, the 8800GTX is quite an over priced card, when really the 8800GTS 640mb should be far than adaquite for now, no matter what your doing, heck nVidia are brinigng out a GeForce 9 series by the end of the year, with guarantees for double the performance over the 8800GTX. So you could get something like an 8600GT now and then upgrade when they come swooping in.
Other things to consider, well i suppose you wont see much speed decreasements by getting a smaller hard drive. But thats just preference. Your motherboard is quite a powerfull one, unless your going for SLi any time soon, you could do what i did, save $200 and get a 650i mobo, same as 680i basically only without the SLi. Again as with preference, your monitor doesn't have to be so huge at 24", just imagine something that big as your computer screen, there s a limit one what will fit in your desk space, and what will be too big. |

there is the link to the shared wish list. how much will the new 9 series cost? Same as the 8 when it came out? Oh, and this will be used for gaming and light video editing Last edited by average650; 08-13-2007 at 12:01 PM. |

If it's only light video editing you could take it down to a dual core if you really wanted to save money.

You don't need XMS2 ram unless you plan on overclocking. Corsair ValueSelect DDR2 667 is fine.
If you'll agree to drop SLI, switch to the ASUS P5K motherboard. Since you're on a budget, get the 320MB 8800GTS. It'll handle anything out there right now just fine, and it gives you DX10 support. I wouldn't play the waiting game for the 9 series cards; we don't yet know how much power they'll require, or exactly when they're coming out. I recently got a Hanns.G monitor, and am very pleased with it. This 22" widescreen is $260: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824254020 If there's something you need vista for (DX10 games, or something) then keep it. Otherwise, XP home is $90. There's a few more changes I would make that don't save you money, but will get you a more reliable system. For a quad core and an 8800GTS, I'd get a Corsair or FSP powersupply. They're more robust at the same power rating as the Enermax. You may be ok with the 520W corsair: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...orsair%2b520hx But I'd let someone else comment who knows the power needs of the q6600. This seagate harddrive has a longer warranty (5 yrs instead of 3) for $5 more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262 The 320GB model is only $10 more than that. Lastly, we recommend LiteOn for optical drives. This SATA Retail version comes with burning software: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106072 *EDIT* I'd keep the quad core if possible. More and more applications and games are being written to take advantage of multiple cores, so it would be a good investment. Last edited by LeftyAce; 08-13-2007 at 01:36 PM. |

The Q6600 requires 105watts of power, or theres a new 'Energy Efficient' version which gulps up 95watts. Personally you might be ok with a 520watt Power Supply, but i'd recommend something a little bit higher. My Core2Duo system with a 320mb 8800GTS, E6750, 2GB SLi ram was estimated that I needed a 470 watt Power Supply, so based on that a 600 watt is a minimum really, I like to be future proof, so i'd get a 700 watt if possible.
My OCZ 600watt should last me for some time because i decided to get higher. |

http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/...Number=7878927 There's my new one. That saved a lot. I really liked the 24 inch, but it's probably not worth the extra 200. And I am planning on overclocking so I'll keep that ram.

I would still suggest you get the ASUS P5K motherboard. You don't need the SLI option, and it's better to use an intel chip with an intel processor (The P5N is an nVidia chip).

The 650i does not have SLi just to clarify,
And LeftyAce, i'm not quite sure what your talking about, it doesn't matter if you use an Intel chip on an Intel motherboard or an NVIDIA motherboard, it really depends on the speed of the actual motherboard. One thing I would point out is the P5K is Crossfire, while your getting an NVIDIA Card. Just bear that in mind if you do get a P5K. |
