Building my first computer
Hey PCMECH forums. I'm building a PC for highschool and gaming purposes and I've chosen some parts here, any suggestions?
My budget is flexible, I'm trying to get a job come September, hopefully at a Computer parts store (Employee discounts and such) Currently I'm not sure what I should use for a power supply. Welcome to PCMech.
Your CPU and Motherboard use two different sockets. 939 is older tech, so swap that board for the Asus M2N-E instead. Swap your hard drive for a Seagate instead. They are a bit higher quality then Samsung. Swap your Burner for a LiteOn SATA Retail model instead. They will come with burning software. The Corsair 520HX would be a good power supply choice.

Well, I've got my entire rig on newegg in a temporary wish list, but is it possble to transfer it to public wishlists without an account?
Edit: Also, thanks for the advice, I did those things and it came to $1155 ($1213 CAD) Re-Edit: Current build: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811129021 ASUS M2N-E Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131022 EVGA 640-P2-N825-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130080 CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817139001 AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADX6000CZBOX - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103773 G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820231065 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148262 LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-05 - OEM - http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106073 Last edited by Ichiroga; 08-13-2007 at 04:27 PM. |

So I was chatting with the guys on /g/, and they gave me some advice to change motherboard and go Intel for now, because they're doing better. Also, they said I didn't need that good a GPU unless I was at 1920x1200 resolution, which I really don't plan to be. Should I trust anonymous, or is their advice bad?

According to the charts the 320MB GTS performs a tad better than the 640MB at the lowest resolution. Bigger screen sizes warrant more memory.

We generally do not try to sway people between AMD and Intel because it insights flame wars. But in all honestly, Intel chips have the edge right now and have for some time now. The Core 2 Duo's are fast and inexpensive for the performance you get.
If you want to go that way, swap the board for the Asus P5K and the CPU for the Q6600. |

Hmm, I don't really get how this duo thing works... It looks like an AMD 3.0 GHZ is around 150ish, but I saw a 2.66 GHz Intel for like, 800. Is this because of the dual processors or whatever?

You cant just go by the numbers anymore. Two many new variables. Check out toms hardware to compair them, browse different benchmarks and you get a good feel for what is better.

This is the Q6600: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017 It is actually a quad-core. If you can swing the extra cash, it is a great way to future proof the machine.
If thats too much, go with the E6750 here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...5029&Tpk=e6750 A dual-core and a heck of a deal. |

Aight, so I chose a whole mess of new parts and I'm far too lazy to post the links right now, so here's a screenshot of my wishlist on newegg.
http://i10.tinypic.com/61mc2lk If anyone srsly needs the links I can post them, but this mac at my friend's house has a screwed up copypaste right now. |

Just two things pop out to me. I would switch to an Asus board. BFG is known for video cards, I have no idea how good their boads are. Asus is top notch. The P5K here is a good choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131180
Also, go with this burner, it has software: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106072 |

If you're not going with SLi, go with a P35 northbridge chipset.
Asus P5K, Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R, and Abit IP35 are good boards.

Looks solid!
Minor suggestions; The best price/value ratio for the seagate hard drives is currently the 320GB drive. Would only cost you $10 more. Another would be to go with the Superclocked EVGA 8800GTS. It's worth the $20 or so but it's really up to your budget. You could save some $$ by going with the Corsair DDR800 Ram with 4-4-4-12 timings. Anyway, enjoy the build! $30 more is great for 70 extra gigabytes and better graphics. I think I'll go with that. Thanks again!
