i think somethings wrong with my cpu

I just built my first computer a few days ago. Here are the specs.

CPU- e6750
ram- 2x 1gb corsair vs
hdd- seagate 7200.10
mobo- gigabyte p35
dvd- lite-on
gpu- evga 7600gt
psu- thermaltake purepower 500w
os- vista home premium 64-bit

The first day I built it, everything went fine. I downloaded a vista gadget that showed the cpu usage of both cores and also the ram. The cores always operated around 1-5% when surfing the web. However, the second day after using it I noticed that one of the cores would reach around 70% and the other one around 20% when I'm not doing anything or vice versa. When I run disk cleanup both cores would reach around 95% each. That very odd. I didn't overclock the computer and the case feels cool. So I don't think its the fan temperature. However it could be. Has this ever happened to anyone?

I am using CC cleaner, adaware2007, spyware blaster, and avast free antivirus.

did this all happen after installing adaware?

if so, that may have soemthing to do with it. according to their website, it's not Vista ready.

just a thought

Those % numbers have nothing to do with temperature, so cooling isn't an issue.

Open up the task manager (I think you can still hit ctrl-alt-del in vista) and see how much CPU usage it lists. Then sort the running processes in order of highest CPU usage. That'll tell you what's hogging the CPU.

went to task manager and found out that it was nero causing the CPU to reach 48-50 in the processes area. Is nero really a cpu hog?

Were you burning something? If you just dragged a file onto a cd, nero has to convert it to the .iso format, and then burn it, so it's not surprising it took up some cpu time.

Can you kill nero? I really doesn't need to run in the background all the time.

To prevent it from starting automatically, go into msconfig (start => run => 'msconfig') and in the startup tab uncheck Nero.

will this also work for vista? Also, since I use firefox, do i need windows explorer? I see it in the processes tab in the task manager using up the most ram out of everything else.

It is still available in Vista. Here's a link to instructions: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305415

(I know, it's ironic it's an apple site, but it's the first thing I found on google....) Just look for nero instead of quicktime :-)

Windows explorer is not Internet Explorer. Windows Explorer is in charge of your desktop, icons, start bar, window borders, etc. Very important. For fun, you can kill it and see what happens. Then either reboot or use the task manager's 'run application' button to re-start explorer.exe
