First post - First new build
Im looking to replace my present system (3+-year-old DELL Dimension P4, 1GB, 2xSATA, DVD, CD, ATI Radeon x300SE, Soundblaster audigy, running under XPHome with reasonable and growing use of Linux), and intend to build rather than buy.
Current workload - general office, WP, browsing, Email, photo management / storage, music storage / playing, video playing, backups, security etc. Gaming not a priority. Intend to add print / storage server capability (home) and home network. Ethernet and wireless are needed. Budget set at £1000 / 1500. I want to get as powerful a system as I can for that money. Components probably coming from Dabs.ie / Komplett.ie. Here is where Im at: Prices are a bit tentative but overall in the right ball-park. Case No specific model in mind Antec / Coolermaster / Gigabyte? Ease of installation and room for expansion more important than looks (providing it not actually ugly!). Budget say 100+/- PSU Depends on case / components selected? Cooling Do.? M/board perhaps ASUS P5K Deluxe P35, based on various articles. Cost approx. 200 Processor E6750 1333MHz, based on what I have been reading. Cost approx. 190. Ram 2GB DDR2 perhaps Corsair Twin2X 6400 Cost approx. 100 HD 2x SATA - perhaps Samsung spinpoint T166 320GB 7200 Cost approx. 150 Video Want good card but does not need to be a great card. Perhaps GEForce 8600GT GDDR3 256MB Cost approx. 125 Sound Onboard sound good enough?. DVD No specific model in mind, cost approx 50 Display 19/20 LCD, no particular model in mind. Cost approx. 250 Could reuse existing 17LCD. OS Vista, probably Home Premium.OEM 32bit . cost approx. 110 Keyboard/mouse/speakers - reuse existing items. Total cost approx. 1100-1300 (depending on display) plus PSU/Cooling. Probably obvious to you from the above that I need help with this list of components. Any such help would be greatly appreciated. My only suggestion would be to switch to a Seagate drive. They have better warranties, performance, and have had a better track record lately. Make sure to get a 7200.10 series drive.

With the video card you selected, a Corsair 520HX would power you just fine. If the Corsair is too high, look to FSP in an equal wattage.
Don't need extra CPU cooling, the heatsink that comes with the CPU is good.

After further research, I have put together the following spec. The prices (Euros) are not exact and it may be possible to improve on some.
Case Coolermaster Mystique 631 110 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku...&view=detailed Power supply Corsair 520W ATX/EPS 120 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=327671 Motherboard ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP, P35 185 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=335581 Processor Intel duo E6750 2.67GHz 1333MHz with cooling 180 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=338082 RAM Corsair Twin2X 6400 ddr2 CL5 100 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=312054 Graphics ASUS GeForce 8600GT 512MB GDDR3 170 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=337821 Hard drives 2xSeagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 160 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=320709 OS Probably Vista home premium OEM 100 This spec is based on some knowledge, some research and lots of instinct! The questions I have are the following 1. Is this a good compatible selection of componentsa which will give me very good performance now and future upgrade options. 2. Do I need additional cooling, and, if so, what suggestions please? 3. I want a dvd drive and a cr-rom drive. Any suggestions for specific models? 4. Im assuming the integrated sound will be OK without the need for a sound card. 5. Im assuming I will reuse my display, mouse, keyboard. Can I ask again for input / comments on this please? nomadic |

1 selections look good, everything looks compatilble to be.
2 You should not need additional cooling unless you get into OCing some day. I am not familir with that case but my 6750 runs very cool with stock cooler even when gaming. Im using an Antec 900 so quite a few fans buit dont think you will have any problems. 3 Look at lite-on and buy retail to get the free burning software. Make sure it is SATA. 4 Intergrated sound is great on my system, I dont think a sound card is needed unless you have very good speekers or need a special feature it offers for recordiing. 5 Re-using things is fine, the MB only supports USB for the mouse so if yours only has the older round (cant remember name) connector you will need to get a USB adaptor. Overall I think you did a good job on parts. I personally would want a little stronger vid card, but I am a gamer and just dont know much about performance on the 8600 except how it relates to gaming. It might even be a better choice for a non-gamer. Kat Last edited by Katreat; 08-31-2007 at 10:43 AM. |

Thanks for the input so far.
I have 4 questions remaining before I set about ordering parts. 1. Ive gone for a better graphics card (I think!). Any comments on it? 2. Ive added a display rather than reuse my old one. Any comments on it? 3. Ive added a LiteOn DVD. I cant confirm if this is ok under Vista? 4. Is the 520W Corsair power supply still adequate for this package? Case Coolermaster Mystique 631 110 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku...&view=detailed Power supply Corsair 520W ATX/EPS 120 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=327671 Motherboard ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP, P35 185 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=335581 Processor Intel duo E6750 2.67GHz 1333MHz with cooling 180 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=338082 RAM Corsair Twin2X 6400 ddr2 CL5 100 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=312054 Graphics Gainward GeForce 8600GTS 256MB GDDR3 GS, PCI-Express 190 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=334403 Hard drives 2xSeagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 160 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=320709 OS Probably Vista home premium OEM 100 DVD / CD LiteOn 20x DVDRW SAW SATA Retail Kit 38 http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?...ey=11155,50837 Monitor Samsung 20LCD Syncmaster 206BW TC003 280 http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=322266 Suggestions / comments would be greatly appreciated. 1: Good for what your uses are.
2: Samsung makes good monitors,I think you will be happy with the one you picked. 3: The DVD itself will be OK, the software is probably Vista ready 4: Still good on the PSU. |

1. for the graphics card, find the same card but from either the evga or Xfx manufacture
2. monitor looks goods, samsung is always a reliable source for displays 3. the dvd-rom will be able to work with vista 4. 520w power supply is sufficient, but you feel that it's not, go for the Corsair 620w |
