A Challenge For You
Right my current system is way outdated still on AGP.
I want to start from scratch. I live in the UK so you guys are gunna have to find some UK sites or go to these.. www.ebuyer.com www.overclockers.co.uk www.dabs.com Feel free to use as many sites as you like to get the cheapest buy I don't care how many different places I order from. I'm looking to spend around £650 - £675 on a futureproof-ish system as DX10 and Vista and new games are all trying to mix together. I game alot so I want it slick and smooth no lag. I've already sort of decided what makes and stuff I want I just want your help to choose which bits and make sure its all compatible. Must haves: Core 2 Duo no less than 2.4GHz in each core. Corsair Ram at least 2GB 250GB Hard Drive no less. nVidia please none of that ATi rubbish (i'm thinking 8600GT Fatal1ty Edition looks so good)http://www.pc4all.co.kr/imgdata/53277-1.jpg Sound card I don't really care although a Fatal1ty one would be nice A good ASUS motherboard, fully supportive of the ram you get me. (I don't wana do SLi) Everything else is all upto you to pick Last edited by freakitchen; 08-31-2007 at 10:25 AM. |

Loving that set-up. Fair enough on the sound.. the GFX card you picked out is confusing me a little?
Which is best and in which order? GT, GTX, GTS or Ultra? Anyways does anyone think they can better that? |

This is worst to best
8600 GT, 8600 GTS, 8800 GTS, 8800 GTX, 8800 Ultra That 8800 GTS is a huge upgrade from the 8600 you mentioned. |

The 8800 GTS is also the better buy, at least out of the 8800 series.

It sounds as if you already have an idea which parts you want to get for this new computer. Why don't you list the parts you have in mind already and then we'll tell you if there's something better in the same price range or if you've picked a winner already.

XP or Vista though most of my games won't support Vista yet and I guess if I still got XP I could pay less to get Vista and just upgrade..
Btw the challenge was to choose the case too, something that you would reccomend. Well what was suggested above is great but what could you make better to use more money.. like the DVD burner? Last edited by Devastator; 08-31-2007 at 04:59 AM. |

Depending on what you want to spend, here are two options. I personally have a Coolermaster Case and love it. However, the Antec cases are known for being very solid quiet cases.
Antec P182 - £67 Coolermaster Elite 330 - £23

Ok cool I think a Coolermaster one is probably the one for me.. the Antec one is nice but probably a bit to much for what I want really.
I found one sort of inbetween and like the idea of a side window http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/85282 - £39 So is that all I don't need any other fans or heat sink or anything added to that set-up? Thanks for all your help by the way. Oh yeh forgot to mention this PC is going to need to be wireless so what do you reccomend doing? Last edited by Devastator; 08-31-2007 at 01:29 PM. |

A 'Retail' CPU will come with heatsink/fan for the CPU. And your case comes with a couple fans, so you're all set there.
If you have a wireless router, buy a wireless card that is the same brand. We recommend Linksys if you don't have anything yet.

Devastator, just a note with overclockers and ebuyer - once you have your decided parts, try choosing it from both websites to see which is cheaper, because I just thought up of a machine similar to what you are picking and overall it came out cheaper on ebuyer.
It pays to shop around. EDIT: Also personally I would rather have the CoolerMaster Centurion 5 than the other one you just linked to. |

I wouldn't recommend a USB wireless card - go for a PCI card instead. USB networking can be unreliable. Since 'speedtouch' wireless cards aren't available, I'd recommend something like this
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/50127 Regarding the case - as a component it's not the best place to blow lots of money, but at the same time, you'll regret it if you go TOO cheap. For that reason, I'd stay away from Ebuyer's 'extra value' line. My view on UK online stores - whilst various components can be cheaper at various different stores, you'll be hit by lots of delivery charges if you shop at too many places. I'd suggest getting as many parts as possible from one store - ebuyer.co.uk *tends* to be the best value overall. You'll pay a slight premium at overclockers.co.uk but you may end up with (arguably) better service.

Thanks for all your advice, with regards to the wireless if I got the next ASUS mobo up with WiFi would that solve the problem then I wudn't need a wireless card at all. I did try and build up the same system on eBuyer but there was one thing I cudn't get the same and Overclockers was cheaper because of there current deal on ram.. however I will double check. Thanks for the help.
Edit: I thought that case could be better because of the 4 fans thats all.. i'll stick to the Coolermaster one.. depends the Antec one looks really nice if I can afford it. |

That "extra value" case looks like it has 2 80mm fans in the back, which means more noise than the 1 120mm rear fan the cooler master centurion 5 has. I have that Corsair 520W PSU and it has been great so far. Looks like you have a nice computer speced out.

I was just watching a review on the Antec Nine Hundred Case
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CA-065-AN http://www.antec.com/images/400/900_q.jpg It said that the motherboard tray is not removable, does that mean my motherboard might not fit into the case or the tray supplied with the motherboard won't be able to go in there so I won't be able to use it? Your motherboard will still fit no problem. A removable tray is more of a convenience feature. I've never actually removed a motherboard tray to install a motherboard before so I really don't know if it makes it an easier, and if so, how much.

Fans draw hardly any power - certainly not worth upgrading the power supply for! Yours will come with plenty of molex connectors - with fans you can daisy-chain them together so as to not use up all of your PSU molexes (fans come with pass-through power connectors).
