Time to replace my tough old socket A system

Well, I can no loger deal with my AMD XP 2800 based system, so its time for a completely new computer. I'll rememember the fond times... smoking P4's for half the price and being able to put Marrowind's setting ALL the way up... and the bad times... going to the store and realizing I can't play ANY of the games they sell there. The end of an era.

Anyway, here's what I'm looking at:

ASUS P5K LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131180
(I might be a little too cheap on the mobo)

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819115029
(I wish AMD was better these days)

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820231065
(2x2GB just doesn't seem economical yet)

EVGA 320-P2-N815-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130038
(Is it worth paying for the 640mb version?)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148140
(HD seems like a good place to be cheap)

LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106057

HIPER HPU-4K580-MS ATX12V v2.2 580W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817128002
(I know better than to scrimp on a PSU, several fried mobo's later...)

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16832116204
(I rememer when I was 8 years old and I was running a 486 with 4mb of ram and windows 3.1, then all of a sudden, this new 32 bit windows 95 comes out and as a kid I couldn't just go spend 200 dollars and buy it and I was sad... Not this time!)

I already have a nice monitor and I'll need to buy the case a a store so I can look at it.

The purpose of this machine would be largely gaming, some video editing and on the rare occasion I have to take work home wth me, processing very large data sets.

Everything looks compatible. It actually looks like my system almost exactly except I used a corsair 620 PSU and corsair ram......... . I have not read anything about the PSU that you chose but it does show up on the good list which is a plus and is selling for a nice price. Some people have suggested that if you have a large monitor you might think about the 640 version of 8800 GTS, not sure what size monitor you run. I run my 320 with a 22 in wide screen and have not had to turn any setting down yet so large must mean 24+.

I have read a lot of posts lately from people running the 64 bit OS and it seems that most of the bugs are clearing up. Just be aware that because 64 bit is not yet mainstream it usually plays second fiddle behind 32 bit getting bug and driver fixes. They seem to be getting around to it better then they ever did with XP 64 but it is still a bit more buggy than vista 32. I went with 32 so I am just repeating what I keep hearing.

in my opinion, i would wait until vista comes out with a service pack 2
i'd go with xp home or professional /SP2 32-bit

right there there is little driver support for 64-bit OS's

i have vista 64, and i can say that i've been able to find the drivers for everything i need, except an outdated mp3 player that later worked after a bios update to it.

but i will say that if you're only getting 2gb of ram, then you'll probably be better off with vista 32 as it seems more programs work with it compared to vista 64.

I recommend you to go with a western digital drive as currently the Seagate 7200.10 320GB drives are having issues with the "chrip of death" you can read more about it here http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...acture=Seagate scroll down to the forums section.

See even more here http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&sa...+death&spell=1 , currently I am sticking to WD until Seagate gets their current problem fixed.

From what others here in the Forum are saying, WD is having a lot of trouble with their drives, too... I've got more Maxtors than anything, but I do have WD and Seagate in this box....

You're going to find people having problems with any brand drives. I've heard of issues with all brands of drives. I personally have WD's and Seagates and haven't had any problems (knock on wood) but my few drives don't represent all the drives out there...
