Please advice for an AMD X2 Dual-Core system's compatability
I'm brand new to the forum as we speak, so if I make any mistake feel free to hint me.
This is my first custom, so I am kind of new to this whole approach. I just want some last verification of the compatibility of the parts before I actually input in the credit card's number and send. Here go nuthing Case: COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119137 PSU: Mushkin 550250 ATX12V / EPS12V 580W Power Supply 115/230 V TUV, CE, CB, cUL, FCC http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817812004 Mother: GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128014 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103759 HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701 HDD: Patriot Extreme Performance 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220144 1st Optical: SAMSUNG Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151153 2nd Optical: Should I get one? SHould be around 10 USD. Modem & LAN: On board? I think I can salvage an Ethernet card from my 4 years old one. [COLOR="Silver"]OS:[COLOR] Microsoft Windows XP Home With SP2B 1 Pack http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116056 Extra RAM: A-DATA Extreme Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820211174 Total w/ Tax no S&H no Extra RAM: 840 USD Total w/ everything but Extra RAM: 930 USD Budget is around 1-1.3K -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PSU: Seem nice and 580 I think should be enough for Sli 8600 GT, unless I am otherwise informed. Mother: I originally picked the ASUS MSN-Sli something something deluxe, not wireless, which is around 140-129 from Newegg. I changed to Gigabyte because they both seem to have identical specs, HD is not that big for me, and the ASUS is a bit expensive for my need. CPU: I plan to OC it to at least 2.8 w/ stock fan and might even push for 3.0 if possible. I might spare for a better fan. I don't see water cooling for me since it is a bit over-kill personally. Feel free to dwell on this a bit. HDD: Might even drop to a 160 Gig of similar series. I personally fancy external over internal. RAM: I original picked the Corsair XMS 2(2x1Gig) w/ EEP and such, which can be found for 79.99 w/ 30 Rebate from Newegg. I switched because I could not find a comment that show people using the Corsair w/ the Gigabyte above, plus the price was higher by liek 30 last time. The two RAM above are proved used by some in the Mother's comment section. 1st Optical: It seem fast and nice. SATA is better than IDE right? SOund Card: I'll stcik w/ on board. I think my system will be powerful enough to handle it w/out halp. Video Card: Seem good and nice, and already oced perhaps. Modem & LAN: On board? I thin kI can salvage an Ethernet card from my older system. I use DSL and rarely to nonexistence LAN game. I use the interweb for game instead. Monitor: Not mention above because I am still contemplating between singe and dual screen. I am looking for size experience and electric consumption. I think two will eat moar than one so I might have to go w/ single. My choice is this SAMSUNG 226BW Black 22" 2 ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1(DC 3000:1) - 280 w/ 40 Rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001096 OS: Quite important. I am purposely set this up Vista ready, once it is less buggy and wire I guess-read it off from some articles. I mostly roaming the interweb downloading movie, game and wat/ever to watch and play, also photoshop seldom. I'll reconsider if informed otherwise I guess. Extras: I'm not sure which one to finalize on. Does the A Data one Sli capable? I might go w/ it instead since it is a lil bit cheaper. As yu noticed that this set up is meant for SLi future. I think the parts are Sli compatible. I just want some confirmation that the parts are all nice and fluffy since i really would not liek to wait, open it and then found out they hate one another. Feel free to praise or criticize anything. Cheerio Last edited by Ahura; 09-04-2007 at 03:17 AM. |

I'm not that famaliar with AMD stuff so I can't comment much there... Personally I prefer ASUS boards, but Gigabtye is decent.
Why two sets of RAM? Keep in mind a 32bit OS can only handle around 3 gigs, give or take. If you still want 4 gigs, get all of the same stuff - don't mix brands. I don't care for Samsung opticals. The standard recommended around here is LITE-ON for burners. Watch for a Retail package that comes with burning software (and go for SATA). I'd keep the 250gb drive, maybe even a 320GB - those get you the most for your money right now. Save a PCI slot and use the onboard LAN. I haven't looked but I bet the boards come with one or even two Gigabit LAN ports - probably better than what you'll salavage from an old system. Honestly, I'd pass on SLI. One powerful video card will outperform two weaker ones. And if you don't go for SLI now, 6 months from now you'll have a hard time finding another card like the one you've got now.

Xp Home is 32 bit. If you want 64 bit OS. need to go for the XP Pro 64bit or Vista 64 bit.

Aw ****.......
I see, thank for pointing that out. Well, I don't plan to get any higher than 2 Gig of RAM for a while. I do want the 64-bit since I prefer to do it now, so I won't have to do it later, but I guess it can't be helped. Btw, I know this is a weird one, but my CPU can run 64-bit right? I sometime just not sure about thing for no reason. Last edited by Ahura; 09-04-2007 at 09:23 PM. |

Drop Video card because after reading some articles, i got confused. Some said both the 8600 are not worth the cost and performance, and that an 8800 GTS is a better choice w/ a lil moar cost. Any idea... Thank |

If you are looking at it for gaming, the 8600s are a bit weak. Too many older 9x cards are both cheaper and more powerful. The 8800 on the other hand are both 10x and faster than the older 9x competition. So, if you are primarily building a gaming machine the 8800 is the way to go if you can swing it. If you cant I would personally look at the X1959XT. It is only 9X but will run circles around the 8600s in performance.

I'm not a hardcore where every setting must be high, but I do play game from time to time.Just wish that there is liek a choice that is just right between 8600 and 8800, 8700 for my guess. 8800 GTS is nice, but it is way to nice and powerful for me. I leave my computer on almost 20/7 so I would liek a card that does not eat too much into the electric bill. I also really want DX10 because so that I won't have to worry about that later on.
Btw, is my PSU adequate for all my set up? plus a 8600 GT. |

Well, the 8600 is getting great reviews and I have little doubt that it will be an adequate gamer for casual gaming. It is just often reviewed next to the 8800 so it suffers by compairson. I agree with you that they seem to have left a gap between performance but maybe that was to keep open a spot for older 9X cards to fit into.
As to your PSU it's size is fine. As you pointed out the 8600 is a low power card, there are even a couple of makers who make them fan-less, so 580 w should be more than enough. I am not familiar with Mushkin but they are listed on the good list of the PSU faq. ![]() Kat |

ANother question. The mushkin's PSU has liek 4 +12v connectors. From what I know, yu only need liek 2 for Sli right. SO then what can yu do w/ the other 2 +12v?

Are you talking about 12V rails? That's an internal thing you don't really have to worry about. Any extra connectors you just leave out all together (since it looks like it is a modular PSU). Otherwise, you'd just stuff extra connectors into a drive bay or any other empty space...

I see. OK, I think I'm going to go w/ this 8600 GTS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130086 . But a question, from the shots of the card, it show that I will need a 6-pin PCIe power connector. I'm not 100% sure, but does that mean I will have to join 2 +12v into a 6-pin using one of the thing that come w/ the card?

The power supply will have a specific 6pin PCI-E connector for the video card power. You can see it on the Mushkin unit in Newegg's photos.

Not for SLI...
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html The certified PSU's for 8800GTS's are 650W and well above. |

Argh, kay thank yu anyway.
I heard that the 8900 should be coming out around November of 07, about the same time as ATI's release of G600 or something. Meybe by then the price of the 8800 GTS would drop, making it moar affordable eh. I know it kind of annoying of me asking all this cluster question, but say if I change my mind and want to go w/ the 8800 GTS instead would the Nvidia 570 GPU good enough for the card to maximize its potential? Thank thank thank thank x.x Last edited by Ahura; 09-06-2007 at 06:08 PM. |

Not sure if I follow your question. The 'Nvidia 570' on the motherboard spec sheet refers to the chipset, not the video card. And that board can handle the 8800 no problem.

Not much really. I believe there are a few cards PCI-E expansion cards you can put in for other things...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...k=&srchInDesc= Those add on Firewire ports...back up a level on the search and there are other PCI-E to USB ports, SATA ports, etc...actually there's a lot more than I thought there was. Unfortunately there isn't anything really useful like PCI-E sound cards yet... |

I see, thank
Btw, anyone use the CM 690 case before? It's relatively new, but seem to be really good in term of pretty much everything. Might even rival the Antec 900 if I may assume. Last edited by Ahura; 09-07-2007 at 04:07 PM. |
