If you had to provide SSN to get prize then make sure you take taxes into account and perhpas hold some back for next April 15th.... unless they already took taxes out and the 1800 was your net...
PC looks nice - though personally I am not a fan of fancy boxes for parts (the case).

1800 cash after taxes and fancy boxes me neither But heh its free and i got what i was looking for so it makes me happy.... i could cut down the price of the case and go with a better vid card but i think an 8800gts will do just fine
i really dont need an ultra... and i have heard good things about the cooling on that case

The case goes on sell quite a bit so be sure to shop around before you buy. I have seen it a few times in the $70 range with sales or rebates. It does not look like your going SLI so you might shop around for a good non-SLI MB. My last two builds have been Intel so not sure what to recommend but generally you can save a bit by just leaving the extra socket off the board. Everything looks great. I am out of the loop on how the 6400+ performs, Toms Hardware only lists up to the 6000+ on their comparison charts, so wont comment on alternative processors.

The Centurion 5 is an ok case. I had to trade up to the Antec 900. Very poor air flow in the coolermaster.
I don't like AMD so I wont comment on the Proc. I had Gigabyte two years ago and had voltage stablity problems and I wasnt even OCing. Up the GTS to a 640 Up the PSU to a 620 (excellent psu by the way) Western Digital Drives have been flaky as of late. Look at a segate drive. How far away from your router will your computer be? if its not a room away I would suggest nixing the wireless card and just going hardline to the router. Why are you going with G tech instead of Draft-N? Those are my thoughts.

Here is a thought, upgrade your existing system with a few hundred and save the rest.
Crazy I know.

I would do the same, just get the new processor and be done. That should get you a great speed boost. This is what i would do having an AM2 system myself.

Yes, I agree with Alaron, you already have a good shell to work with. Just upgrade that and save the rest of your money. I would get:
$170 - AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103773 $529.99 - EVGA 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB 384-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130072 - You could just get an 8800GTS 320MB ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130038 ) if you want to save money, but since you were going to build a whole new computer, why not splurge on a really nice video card? $100 - Corsair 520W PSU with 3x18A 12V rails (much more power than your current one) - http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-520w...203270716.html - It doesn't sound like much of an upgrade but it is. It essentially has a huge 52A 12V rail. It should be able to handle any single video card well into the future. You current PSU technically could handle an 8800GTX but I don't think that I would try it personally. So for $800 (more if you get a new keyboard/mouse/monitor, etc.) you could upgrade your current PC and make it into an extreme gaming machine. Or you could spend $1800 and have a brand new mid range gaming machine. Going the upgrade route is a no-brainer to me. If you want a nice LCD I have personal experience with this Samsung line and they are very nice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001236 , but I bet that Acer would be great too.

I'd say go for the upgrade route also, and with the spare parts you have, buy a few more and build a nice little file server or HTPC.
Or even get a kickass new monitor mouse and keyboard.. One thing is for sure I wouldn't pour all 2k into one whole new computer. |

Well i decided to go the upgrade route.... got the new corsair psu and 8800gtx that was recomended.... but i couldnt resist.... had to go with the 6400+ sorta wishin i stuck with the 6000+ not that i am unhappy with it.... its freakin sweet... but the extra $90 for .2 ghz plus the money for the heatsink just isnt worth it lol...... got caught up in the excitment of free money i guess lol......what is the memory cap in vista ultimate 32 bit....... i would love to add more ram....i know its not needed yet.... and i know 64bit would have been better for me to get if i wanted to add more memory but hey... vista was free (legaly too) so i cant complain... but we just got the other half a new dell and i have $150 left i was wanting to put into memory if possible.....

I think with 32 it is like 3.2 or 3.4 gigs useable. The reason most people dont try to maximize it is that:
1) 2 g will handle just about everythinig you throw at it so you see virtually no imporovement increasing it. That is somewhat software dependent, some software is designed to utilize and benefit from more, but the average gamer will not notice the difference. 2) Getting to 3 either requires you to use a couple 512 sticks (to keep them paired and get that improvment) or go with a full 4 gigs and just have a gig of ram sitting here doing nothiing. With the price of ram today, that is probably the better option, because then you can upgrade to 64 bit when you need it and already have 4 gigs in the machine. Generally speeking, more ram is good, so I wont say having 3 g will hurt anything, it is just not really necessary. But if you are determined to do it go for another set of 2 gigs. Ram is cheep right now and you can wirite it off to future proofing your computer for when you upgrade to 64 bit. Trying to put just one more gig in there will leave you with a couple of orphaned 512 sticks when you upgrade to 64 and want more ![]() Kat |

i know i wouldnt see much of a difference but was just thinkin of the future on games or applications that may benefit.... course the move to 64 bit probably wont be on this rig or any time soon so i may save the money..... and just want to clearify something for those who are reading that read a post of mine in the vista forum.....

Well, I dont think dells are all that bad if you want something for internet browsing and light office applications. The price is right, they use quality parts, and offer good support, what more could you ask
. On the other hand, if she knew you hated dell and ordered it anyway, you might have a bigger problem than a dell in the house .Kat |
