Freezes on welcome screen

Hi Gang

Putting together a computer, have a Gigabyte GA-81P775, Pent 4, I stalled a good copy of XP Pro. Gets to the welcome screen and freezes up, I have let it sit there for an hour, no change. I can get to the desk top in safe mode, but I cannot change any thing there, so that does me no good. It never gets to the log in screen. Have tried changing several things in the Bios, no difference. Any ideas.???? When it does get to the welcome screen, it freezes, no cursor action.

Thanx and take care........Gunny

Hi gang

I don't know if this has any connection or not, but when I was installing XP pro, when it gets done with everything, and restarts your computer, you are supposed to leave the disc in and it restarts and has you go through getting it registered and all that well it did not do that this time, it went straight to the welcome screen and froze up. And it has done this ever since. I have reformatted the drive again and reinstalled XP pro and it does the very same thing. I can turn the welcome screen off but then it just shows a blue screen and it freezes there.

Thanx..........Gunny

Please post the complete system specs for this computer. List all the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

Genuine MS XP Pro CD or burned copy?

Hi Cricket

Now how did I know you was going ask that. ha ha ha ha I know that was stupid of me to think a good answer could come out of just the few bits and pieces I put out.

Ok will do, but before I do that one thing. The MOBO I have had a little tag over 4 of the pin connections on the ATX, (Power supply connection to the MOBO) Giving me the idea you could use either a 20 or 24 pin connection to the MOBO. The PS I am using is a 500w 20 pin connector. This is the first MOBO I have seen that gives you this choice. All the others I have seen either you use the 20 pin or a 24 pin, no choice.

Thanx and take care........Gunny

I think you should use a ATX 2.0 24 pin power supply with that motherboard.

Hi Cricket

Its funny how your mind works, or should I say your poor memory works. Both times when I installed XP pro, after all was said an done and it looked like it was going to open my desktop, there was this little box asking if I wanted Windows to correct the size, because the size looked like it was too small, so I clicked on the ok, and that is when it went to the welcome screen and froze. Both times, same thing. I have done this checking ok with other installs, and clicked ok, and it did get the size close to what I used and we went from there to fine tune it. Both these times no workie.

Hi Cricket

Well I changed the PS to a 24 pin 600W unit that I know is good. No change still does the same thing. I am in the process of getting the other information.

Could try booting up and when you get the message about adjusting image size, just cancel or close the window. If it goes to the desktop, then load the video drivers and such.

Flanzig

That little box coming up there and going to a welcome screen and freezing up, got me to thinking. I had a video card in a PCI slot, so I got a APG card and used that and it is working great now. So it was this video card in the PCI slot that was stopping it. It I guess simply would not work with this MOBO. A lesson learned. I am using a cheap LCD this is one of those widescreens, and the background picture is just a little picture in the mid about 5 or 6 inch square. The rest of the Icons and everthing else is in proportion. Is there any way to enlarge the background with out messing up the icon size, etc.????

For the desktop image look in the Display Properities/Destop/ Postion button, select Stretch.

Hi Flanzig

Perfect. I guess if a person just looked some times, they would find these things. I have never had an occasion to use this, can I use this as an excuse.? Well thanx to all of you I have learned a few new things, now I just hope I can remember them the next time.
