Copied HDD Won't Boot

I copied my old HDD on to a new HDD, using Casper 4.0, with the intention of installing the new HDD in a new PC and using the old HDD/PC as a backup. The problem is that every time I try to boot from the new HDD, with all the old system info on it, I get the following message:

"reboot and select proper boot device", etc.

I've tried booting from the new PC, booting from the old PC ... it just won't boot even though the new HDD is identical to the old one. CHKDSK says the new drive checks out OK. What am I doing wrong?

I'm running WinXP SP2. I intend to install Vista on the new HDD when I get it to run in the new PC.

The new and old PC may not be seeing the new HD as a C: drive. And if the image is of the old PC then the new PC probably will never boot due to the different motherboard/video card drivers. For a new PC, it's always best to do a clean install of the OS/drivers/programs.

I've never used Casper and when I Googled it, I found more warez cracks than anything. If it's a crack, it may not work properly. Anyway, assuming it works like other cloning utilities, put the old drive as master, the new drive as slave and do the clone. The you have to take out the old drive and put the new drive as master. If you leave both drives in you can run into trouble. Make sure they are jumpered correctly for each step. CS should also work but I usually use the master / slave setup. Also make sure you are using a 80 wire cable.

I figured it out. Turns out Casper likes to format the new drive itself. Once I formatted the unpartitioned drive using Casper, it copied and ran just fine.

Thanks!
