Build For A Friend.

This is basically what I wrote up for him, I don't want to change anything unless its not going to work.. tight budget so I've done all I can:

Motherboard: £65.89
MSI P35 Neo-F Socket 775 FSB1333 onboard 8 channel audio ATX
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/128047

Hard Drive: £41.09
Western Digital 160gb SATAii/150 7200RPM 16MB Cache - OEM
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115411

Processor: £74.95
Intel E4400 Socket 775 2x2.00GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/127326

RAM - Memory: £64.99
Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 CL4
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/111439

Graphics Card: £94.85
EVGA 8600GT Superclocked 256MB GDDR3 DVI HDTV out PCI-E Graphics Card
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/131120

Case: £39.99
CoolerMaster Centurion 5 Silver Trim With Side Window - NO PSU
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/85282

Power Supply: £44.84
Corsair VX450WUK 450W PSU
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/131052

DVD Read/Write Drive: £20.27
LiteOn DH-20A1S 20X DVD?RW/DLRAM Black Bare Drive – OEM
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/131151

Keyboard: £6.97
Microsoft Black Wired PS/2 Keyboard 500 - Retail Box
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/88759

Mouse: £11.99
Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse USB/PS/2 – Black
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/106194

Monitor: £229.19
ASUS MW221U 22” TFT Wide Screen (With Integrated Speakers)
http://www.lucmos.co.uk/index.asp?fu...&productid=427

I know the monitor is a bit excessive but that's the only part he picked himself and hes prepared to pay.

So is all good to order?

Just a couple of suggestions,

The case and power supply you've picked are fine - but this Antec Sonata III case is actually £10 cheaper altogether.

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/128045/rb/0

I'd personally be happier with an ASUS than an MSI motherboard for quality reasons

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/113965

The memory you picked is showing as out of stock. You really only need DDR2-667, unless your friend specifically wants to overclock the system.

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/98691

Finally, I think the monitor is overpriced for the specs that it has. For the same price, you can get a Samsung 226BW, which is a step up in terms of both specs and quality

Thanks for all that, I simply chose the MSI mobo because i've had one for 3 years and it's been flawless, plus I thought P35 chipset was really the best buy at the moment over the P965. Thanks for the advice on the ram, will do that. Case wrong link... that ones £70 something. As for the monitor thanks alot.. I really wanted him to get one from ebuyer.

The P35 *is* a newer chipset than the p965 - it offers support for the 1333FSB processors, whereas 965 will only do upto 1066. It's up to you whether you want to go for stability, or upgradability here. MSI boards are not low quality by any means, just a step below ASUS in terms of track record of quality over the years. Since you have the option of saving money on both the case and RAM, why not go for the ASUS P5K - P35 chipset and ASUS quality.

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/129125

The case I linked to is £70 plus, but it comes with a high quality, Seasonic made 500w power supply, which makes it cheaper than the case and power supply you chose, combined.

You want to be looking at OEM software, specifically:

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114048

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/132195

Unless your friend specifically NEEDS the features of Pro (mostly advanced networking), Home represents much better value for money

Edit: The Antec case comes with only one fan in the rear.. would it be advisable to buy one to go in the optional slot in the front?

Looks good to me. You could go for this keyboard and mouse bundle, which would get your friend a wireless mouse

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/93725/rb/0

The Sonata is optimised for cooling - that rear fan is really all you'll need. I'd only suggest adding a front fan if he crowded out the case - maybe with a larger video card or more hard drives. With stock cooling, you'll be surprised how quiet the system is, which is always a good thing.

One final suggestion - how about a 250GB hard drive for just about the same price?

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/131301

Anything outside 250-320GB these days, and you're not getting good value for money.

We're just putting it together now.. it seems the 8600GT doesn't have a connector to the power supply.. I thought this card would need more power but I see n connector on the back of the card.. does it not need any power or am I looking in the wrong place?

No, that particular card doesn't need direct power from the power supply, hence no connector
