Do i need to apply new thermal grease

Ok - been working on a new build. It seems the motherboard was bad. I bought a new motherboard and went with an ASUS instead. In trying to remove the heatsink I pulled the processor up with it. (YIKES) No pins missing so it looks ok. My question is when putting the CPU and thermal fan in the new board can I just replace it or is it a must to put on new grease. Thanks for any help.

Yes, putting new thermal grease is necessary to get good thermal bond, without it your cpu will probably overheat.

How would the power supply come out if you removed the CPU heatsink?

No, removing the Heatsin/fan from the CPU I mean. I try once, after I misaligned my stock HSF, it will not let go, the HSF, so I had to kind of slide it across the CPU to fit. Then Gato here said that he accident yanked out his CPU w/ the HSF, so I was wonder is there a correct way and not just grab and pull. Meybe s lil spin at X X degree or wat/ever.

I have read some people use a putty knife and slide it in between and others have mentioned a blowdryer. Or an exacto knife.

It is usually best to remove the heatsink just after running a game, so that the paste is still soft, making removing the HSF easier.

After releasing the holding mechanism for the HSF unit....GENTLY twist the HSF unit, side to side, to release it from the CPU.
