BSOD in XP

Hi,

Recently, my friend bought a PC. Didn't really remember the spec. But I'll try my best..
Here goes:
Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz
Some 946GZ board.
A-data 512MB ram if im not wrong
Seagate 80GB HDD

Sorry couldn't remember much.

The BSOD leads to a reboot. The BSOD reported some physical memory dump thing and need to be rebooted. It also talks about disabling some kind of cache if this proper continues.

Anyone has any idea on this?

Oh, and my friend bought it down back for some "servicing". The technician first reported that it's a very strong virus.
And later he reported that registry is corrupted.
I think after the servicing, things are fine again, however it's happening again after a day.

Does your friend have a antivirus program installed on his computer?

Yes Cricket. The technician recommended Mcafee VirusScan Plus and she bought it down.

This is a store bought name brand computer, right? With a warranty? Take advantage of the warranty and have the store fix the problem.

Yes it's a store built system. I think the warranty is still valid, however she was asked to pay for diagnostic fee and stuff when she brought it down previously. I don't trust the store personally, because it's giving craps report about the crash. I believe the store will ask her to pay for this and that and recommend she buy some product again.

I'll try to get the dump file report and see what's the stop message.

Okay...then we're going to need more info. Getting the exact wording of the BSOD error message is very helpful in a situation like this.

Also, does this happen randomly or is your friend using a specific program when this happens?

Besides McAfee (ugh), what other background programs are running on this computer?

You might want to run Memtest86+ to see if the RAM is the problem.
