You saw sparks?? What is the power bar? Sparks aren't a good sign...

If your seeing sparks the biggest likley hood is you've got a duff Power Supply, should've checked out the good PSU tables. You see you've got a Quad powering there with an 8600GT, both of which are quite power consuming, you could have gone too low on the power supply is my guess. I'd of recommended at least a 600 watt power supply for you.

yeah, I actually bought a barebone kit and that's what it came with, should I just buy another one right now and save the hassle, or try the out of case test??

I would replace the power supply. With any luck, your other components are ok. Check out the link not important gave you for good quality units.

Also, let's say I plug the Psu by itself in the wall, not connected to the rest of the pc, shouldn't the fan on the psu be turning, when i turn the switch on the back on, or does it only kick in when the computer boots?

Your PSU is bad. Check the lists on here and choose a good one. Never use ultra. I wouldnt even use them as a paper weight.

s well as getting a new PSU, I would check the 24pin plug (where you said the sparks were coming from) on the mobo and psu, and check if they fit in properly and securely. Sparks usually happen when tho connection is loose. Hopefully the rest of your pc is ok.
