Upgrade of Video Machine
As I posted in another thread to decide whether to do this or not I currently have a 2.4ghz C Hyperthreading P4 with an Asus P4P800 board.
What I'm looking at upgrading to are the following specs and I just wanted to get your opinions as well as an oinion on what Video card to use since mine is AGP and I need to move to PCI Express My current PSU is an Antec Tru Power 2, 550-watt so I think that will be good for what I am going to build. MOBO: $113 ASUS P5K SE LGA 775 Intel P35 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131189 CPU: $195 Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115029 RAM: $60 (after rebate) Crucial Ballistix Dual Channel 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0&sku=C19-4332 I really didn't want to spend more than $400 on this upgrade but with the addition of the video card I feel like I am going to have to. I am doing lots of video editing so I do need a good video card but I don't think I want to go over $100. I also think I want to PCI Express x16 since the mobo supports it. Also what are your thoughts on the upgradability of this rig down the road? I figured to put some extra into the mobo so later I could possibly just upgrade the CPU and RAM. Thanks for all your help. |

The motherboard is quite futureproofed, being composed of intels latest chipset. As for video card, a 8500gt should be sufficient, maybe a 8600. Not sure what price these run at where you are, but they shouldn't be too much.

The video card has far less to do with video editing than your proc and RAM. Really, your vid card would just be assisting on any 3D effects you might be previewing / rendering in the background. I have a Radeon 9250 in one of my boxen, and it's fine with what I do. You definitely do not need a high-end graphics card unless you are a gamer or doing a ton of 3D graphics.

I would even consider a board with onboard video to save some cash right now - you can add a card later if you want. Look at a P5K-VM.

The problem with the P5k-VM looks like its uATX and doesn't have enough PCI slots for me.
I think i could probably do about $40. Something like maybe this.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102704 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121027 |
