Help me finalize my 1st build...

I am finishing up my first build, and need some advice with a few components. For the record, this system will be used for general home use, photo editing and some music and video editing, etc. I will not really be playing all kinds of games but that may change in the future.

Here is what I have so far, I hope the links are still valid...

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148140

The motherboard I chose was the following...

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard – Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131070

I can no longer find it on Newegg so I need help choosing another one.

Now to my random questions...
  • I will be purchasing my keyboard and mouse from a box store. Is it better to buy a monitor at one as well? I want a 22" widescreen monitor. What do I need to pay attention to and what brands are good?
  • I have an OEM version is XP... will that work for me on this computer?

I think that's it. Thanks so much...

Blake

hi, welcome to PCmech,
the list looks good.
You might think of getting an 8600 series video card. they are about $100, but you will have DX10 support, might be useful if you decide to upgrade to Vista in the future. Win XP is a good choice right now, but in about 6 months Vista should be solid also.

Case is personal preference usually. For about $50 you probably could get a bit better case w/o PSU from Coolermaster, but it's not that critical.
Also I always look for deal on cases at Frys.com Last week they has a really good Antec case for total of about $35...

good luck

Looks like a good list. The new version of the P5B is the P5K, check them out.

Monitors can be bought online, no problem. Just check the shipping cost. But they are usually still cheaper then retail stores. Check out the Video forum for monitor threads. There are plenty. We recommend Samsung and Acer.

OEM version of XP is fine.

I'll check out the 8600s. What is the advantage of DX10? Not gonna use Vista right now, been hearing too many bad things about it...

Here is one I found...

EVGA 256-P2-N755-AR GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Superclocked Video Card - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130088

Not much more than the one I had already picked out. Is this one much better???

No reason for onboard video when you have a card. Go with the base P5K instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131180

No advantage to DX10 if you have XP. But the 8600GT is a good card for the money.

Are there potential problems with having a MB with onboard video and having a video card? If not, would the 8600GT be the better deal for the money, as it is quite a bit cheaper with rebates.

Not trying to sound dumb, just trying to learn:-)

No problems. I'm just pointing out that if you are not going to use the onboard, why get the board with it?

Also I would advise you to get the E6750 over the E6600, cheaper and faster.

Yes, definately switch to the E6750.
The 8600GT is good for the money if you don't plan on doing a bunch of gaming.
Case is a matter of taste, but I would recommend this one w/o a PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068

Here is a very nice 22" widescreen moniter:

He already has the case so that is a done deal

I second, third, or whatever moving video card up to the 8600 which is getting great reviews. It is a bit weak for a true gamer but will be much more future proof than the 7600. Also, definately move up to the 6750, faster and cheaper, what more could you ask.

Everything looks good to me. Remeber, if you send in the mail in rebate on a product on Newegg.com the warrant is void.

To get the mail in rebate you have to cut the UPC codes or serial numbers off the box and send them in. Newegg won't refund if the box is missing them. Heres all the policies:

hey, i have a quick question...

for video editing....if i have 1 or 2 nice big fast sata hdds (say 2 7200rpm 250gb barracudas), would having just one small IDE drive (say a 40gb) for just windows/apps be ok, or will that still slow things down when doing video work?

thanx.
