First Time Builder

Hello,
I am a first time builder and think I have most of the components picked out, I just want to make sure they are all compatible and one does not outweigh one another and that its balanced, and if its possible to switch to some other product to save money, let me know.

AMD 64x2 6000+
G.Skill 2gb DDR2 800
Thermaltake Toughpower 650W
Western Digital Caviar 250gb
Evga 8600GTS
Asus m2n32-Sli WiFI

My questions are on the motherboard, is the m2n32 a good choice? or should I go with the m2n, and with the 8600GTS, I know you all will tell me to get a 8800 but I am not sure about it. I dont plan on running two 8600's SLI but I just want one that will be able to play all the games with no problems, and I dont need an AMAZING video card, something that works and is good, but if you dont think i'll be happy with the 8600 please tell me. Any other added input or advice on any aspect will be appreciated....open to anything!

Thanks,

Welcome to PCMech.

Your list is solid. We discourage SLI, so go with the M2N-E and one card. It is more economical to upgrade your card later instead of adding an SLI setup. The 8600GTS is a good bang for the buck.

Do you need an optical drive as well? We recommend LiteOn DVD Burners. Get one that comes with software.

And don't forget a copy of Windows.

After just researching I think I'll switch to the OCZ 700W power supply for 109 on newegg after rebate compared to a thermaltake 650W for 150. Stupid question, but do If I buy a DVD burner will it be able to read and play any dvd also so I wont have to buy another drive? and how necessary is a floppy disk drive. Any links or info on optical drives would be great.

Yes, a dvd burner can read and burn both cds and dvds. Most people don't use floppy drives anymore. If you do use them often, then they arn't very expensive.

Here is a good 8600gts that is factory overclocked

I would go with this Seagate instead of that Western Digital. 320GB are the best bang for the buck right now.
