New build, powering up problem...

I followed the instructions for a new build, and installed the parts outside of the case. When I power up the system, the fans spin for a few seconds but then shut off. Can someone help me troubleshoot this problem???

Do you have all of the power connections in place? There should be a 24pin and a separate 4pin power connection.

Yes, I have both plugged in.

The light on the motherboard lights up, and the CPU and video card fan spin but shut off after a few seconds. Also no display on the monitor.

Post your system specs. List all the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

Here are my components. Right now I have only the motherboard, processor, 1 stick or memory and the video card installed out of the case.

Double check the heatsink installation. If it's not installed correctly the CPU will overheat and the system will auto-shutdown.

Maybe try putting in both sticks of memory? disclaimer: I have never given advice on a build, and in fact am not even done my first build (the mobo is sitting on the table waiting for my case; i did what you are doing just last night) I don't know if for the dual-sticks you need to put in both at once. It won't hurt to try that; i did it right off the bat.

When you say processor, you also have the heatsink and fan installed, right? You definitely should.

EDIT: For the dell heatsink, I had to PUSH (my thumb/hand was shaking from the pressure) to get that thing to go in. It really should *SNAP* down, and have no give whatsoever. It took me about 20 minutes to get the courage to push as hard as it took because I had no idea what to expect.

EDIT again: i see you have 172 posts here already. i'll stop posting newbie-to-nonnewbie advice.

The heatsink seems to be seated properly. I made sure all 4 sides clicked when I inserted it.

Actually, try the other stick by itself. Really at this point, if everything is hooked up, you want to start the process of elimination by swapping known working parts in. You wouldn't happen to have access to spare parts that are compatible?

Also make sure it's not something simple like you've got the motherboard setting on a conductive surface and triple check power connections. Make sure the video card doesn't need a seperate plug (doesn't look like it though).

Tried the other stick alone, same results...

I have the motherboard sitting on top of the box it came in.

not sure if it will help, but might want to try the video card in the other pci-e slot, and maybe the sticks of ram in different slots to see if there's any change.

CPU Fan plugged into the CPU_FAN thing?

My motherboard's manual warns that it might not power up if a CHASSIS_FAN is not plugged in, but being as we have the same motherboard, and mine worked without it, this shouldn't be the problem.

By the way, you just copied and pasted your links from elsewhere, so they have "..." in the URL. Dead links.

Question...

After looking over the info for my power supply and my motherboard, I may have them connected wrong. I have on my motherboard a 24 pin EATXPWR connector and a 4 pin ATX power connector. Do I connect the 20 pin power plug and 4 pin plug in beside each other, or does the 4 pin connector go to the ATX connector on the motherboard?

The 4 pin is on the other side of the motherboard.

So you are saying you have the 4 pin connected on the other side of the motherboard and not beside the 24 pin???

Well, the problem is fixed, and it was all my fault. I plugged in the cpu fan, but not the power for the cpu!!! Can you tell it is my first build???

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with my stupidity. We all learn from our mistakes...

Ahh, actually that's a pretty common mistake. Glad to see you got it working now!

Next question. When I screw the motherboard to the case, is there nothing in between them to keep it from shorting out???

You install the brass standoffs in the proper mounting holes (the ones that align to the mounting holes in the motherboard...the ones with the metal ring around them). Don't mount the motherboard directly to the mounting tray or you may fry something when you power up.
