First Build / High end system hardware compatability

Just verifying that this build will work before I begin, it appears fine to me. Since I'm on a buget like most others I will probably be using other lower-end parts until I get the better piece to replace it, but in the end I am hoping that it all works.

Another thing, this motherboard supports 2 AMD processors, can the system be run with only one processor in place or do both need to be there?

In comparison to Alienware's Arua ALX starting @ 4,099 + approx $100 Shipping http://www.alienware.com/product_det...de=SKU-DEFAULT
this seems to be the way to go.

I could use some suggestions for the power supply, should I go with a 1000w since I plan to be adding more in the future or would perhaps a 650w or so be sufficent?

Input devices will be decided later as those don't really matter, for now just a pos generic ps/2 mouse/keyboard will be used.

What are you going to be using this computer for? Makes no sense to use a dual processor motherboard if this is just for home use. That one looks like a workstation motherboard would be a big waste of money for a home computer.

I do high-end gaming and I would prefer to run them at maximum quality sound and video, run graphics editing programs, 30 or so webpages open at once, ftp/web server running, torrents, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, IRC, music, remote desktop and much more multitasking. I realize for the normal user this would be a complete waste of money, but I would like to do a ridiculus amount of multitasking if my computer could handle it..

I don't think you need to spend that much to do that either. Especially not dual processors or $500 RAM. If you want 4 processor cores, get an Intel quad core - for a fraction of the cost. Most of the programs you listed aren't real CPU intensive...I would just get plenty of RAM (quantity counts a lot more than speed). I do a lot of multitasking too - RAM takes the biggest hit. Other than that the CPU doesn't get taxed too much.

$250 for a LAN card?? I recall reading a review of that in Max PC and they basically said it was a waste of money.

I would get...

High end 8800, Intel Quad Core, ASUS P5K motherboard and 4gigs of RAM if I could spend that much. That there will be blazing fast.

I agree with blue60007...you don't have to spend an outrageous amount of money to get a high end system. Carefully chosen parts (that don't necessarily cost an arm and a leg) can get you a top end system that performs as expected. I think you could spend about $2500 and still end up with a system that kicks major butt.

For what was listed, true I wouldn't need that much. I took the price of what I would spend on the alienware system and set that as my limit and decided I would build the highest power system possible within that price range.

Many reviews I've seen about the LAN card from various sites/forums many people have seen a drop in ping, I know it probably doesn't make too much of a difference with a well built system but knowing it's in there makes me happy..

The RAM I am kind of debating, I know I probably don't really need that either as there are several other 2GB sticks that are much cheaper and there will likely be no difference.

I was also considering Intel's Core 2 Extreme over the 2 AMDs, the 2 AMD's were like 600, while Intel's is 900 and I haven't seen any information that really proves one better than 2, though I've yet to search here on that matter..

make sure that your ram is compatilble with your motherboard..
some motherboards are picky on the certain they of ram they use

EDIT: Check out the link, it has some benchmarkings of CPU's

Compatibility should be fine
Crucial: Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-8500 with a maximum of 2GB per slot.*
Plus says it in the motherboard's product specs.

Perhaps I'll tone it down a bit, the more I look the more expensive my taste gets. It's just nice to know that what's in your computer is top of the line,

even if you don't need it.

Instead of the $500 RAM, maybe this;
$184.99 G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

And I'll wait to purchase this since the motherboard has a standard ethernet port already available
$249.99 LAN: Bigfoot Networks Killer NIC M1 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI Network Adapter with a 400 MHz Network Processing Unit (NPU)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833342001

Soundcard can wait
$145.99 Sound: X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro Series by Soundblaster
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2bPro%2bSeries

This takes the price down to 2,109.84 assuming I'll only be using a single processor in the beginning.

I stil want the 2 Athlons as it's still cheaper than Intels Quad-Core and should preform about just the same with 2. The thing I'm still not sure of is if I can run just one processor for the time being or if it has to be two, even though I would eventually get the other one.

I still wish for it to exceed the power of alienware's system, so I don't want to go too cheap and you often get what you pay for.

I think maybe a cheaper power supply as well, but I'm not sure how many watts I should go for as I plan to make future upgrades. There is also a massive

amount to choose from, even if I did have an idea on the wattage I wouldn't be sure exactly which to go with..

You can get a quad core that'll likely outpeform the AMD's. Right now, Intel is king of the hill for getting the most for your buck.

Check out this comparison between the Q6600 and an X2 6000+ (not quite the same as a single FX, but pretty close)
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_20...=871&chart=431

The quad core is nearly twice as fast as one AMD. You won't see double peformance by adding a second AMD, as there is overhead and what not to consider. The Q6600 also costs less than one AMD.

If I wanted to match or exceed the Alienware, here's what I'd do:

Thermaltake Armor Series VA8003BWS Black Full Tower Case w/ 25CM Fan - Retail - $170

I believe I'll go with your suggestion for the processor.
This is 2.4GHz for $279.99 whereas the 2.66 GHz is $539.99, I'm sure there can't be too much of a difference there..
The hard drive doesn't look like a bad choice either, almost a Terabyte.. I would like some 15,000 RPM drives, but I would be paying a fortune to get the

same amount of memory plus it has a 16mb cache anyways..

so..

Processor;

$279.99 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

I'm still considering going with this memory in case I should wish to upgrade to 8 GB of RAM..

Burn's CDs/DVDs with Litescribe, don't really need any other functions there. May upgrade to Blu-Ray burner later..

Optical;
$37.99 LITE-ON Black Litescribe
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106072

Switching to EVGA and saving a few dollars there, plus includes a Lifetime warranty.

Forgetting about Windows Vista Ultimate for now, I'll go with Home Premium just to get 64bit so I can support all the RAM..

OS;
$218.82 -10%/No Shipping Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, Full Version

So now, my new grand total with tax which will be 6%, and without a sound card, or a power suppy, is approxametly 2,554.32

I'd go with the ASUS P5K. Deluxe if you really need the extra features.

There aren't any 15000 rpm desktop hard drives - they are all server drives. Big $$$ and you'll need special SCSI adapters adding more cost and complexity.

Monitor will be a little cheaper @ Walmart as I get 10% off, and though Site-to-Store is not offered for that item, shipping is $7.97. I like the return

policy at Walmart, and if needed then I could return it to any store with no restocking fee.

Windows Vista is a nice price, though I'm curious as to why they're selling it at half the price as most other retailers.

Failed to consider that I guess.

The deluxe asus says "Super Memspeed Technology Enhances Memory Speed up to 75%" while the other doesn't. Used for overclocking I guess. I'm assuming since

it's basically the same model it would also have it. I would prefer 6 sATA ports, though I could live with 4 I guess.
