Choosing Right PSU
Hello follow 'Mechers.
I am in a debate on which PSU to buy with the system blow. Mainly because I've been away from the building pc part for over 3 years now. I am unsure about what Wattage I should go with. Thanks for the help in advanced

A lot of folks here use this Corsair PSU.
I prefer Fortron Source and would probably use this Fortron Source PSU. Cricket

Well, I would say your current set up would work well with a Corsair 520 or any quality PSU in the mid 500 watt range. However, since you chose an SLI board do you plan to eventually go SLI?
With an SLI set up I would suggest going here and finding one that fits your need. http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html I buildt a simmilar set up this year (see signature) and went with the corsair 620 to give me a bit of head room, and because it was on sale at the time Kat

Thanks for the quick replies. I forgot about the PSU Thread.
I fooled around with this calulator found on the PSu thread, > Here < I came up with 420W, with 4 sticks of ram and SLI with 2 8800GTS'. Which is what I plan to upgrade to down the road. BTW its hard for me to get a Corshair PSU since I'm in Canada. My 4 main shopping places are.. www.ncix.com www.tigerdirect.ca www.xoxide.com www.frozencpu.com EDIT/// Katreat (since the post showed after posted) - How is your setup running, and any troubles playing games on High setting. 420 seems a little weak.. I would go with the 520 or 620 to be on the safe side..

So far everything is great. The few problems I have faced so far are traced to Vista, not the hardware. I am running everything so far on High settings but the real test is when my son gets home from college and loads up the FPS type games. I persoanlly play mostly MMOs and Stratagy games so dont really push it that hard.
![]() As for your calculator, I would check the Nivdia list I posted because the smallest Hyper PSU they certifiy for twin 8800 GTS in SLI is 670 w. I know nothing about the true power requirements for SLI so maybe they just really over certify the system, but would not want you to buy a second card and find out you needed a new PSU also, that would get really expensive fast. Dragon, 420 came from the calculator.
Kat, I play FPS games. And I checked the Nividia list and I saw the 670W. So I'm thnking about going 700 or 750. Depends which has a great deal on right now. Anyone know of a PSU thats reasonably priced? For around 150 EDIT/// Came across this - http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...ufacture=ANTEC Price makes me second guess though. Calculators are just an estimate. Go with what's actually been tested to work on the SLI list Cricket posted. SLI is a power guzzler...

I used antec in both my older systems and never had a problem and they do make the GOOD list. That does seem like a very nice price, my only hesitation with that particular PSU is that it is the smallest certified for your planned set up, so does not provide much headroom for future upgrades. Then again, with two 8800s in SLI you probably wont be upgrading for quite awhile.
