smokin My 1st try

I am building a gaming PC for me and the following are the components that I am considering so I would like to know the opinion of some experianced people as to weather this sounds like it will work. I am undecided as to which OS to use although I AM going with a 64bit system so I have listed all three. Is the XP pro 64bit DX10 compatable? Also I have chosen the Nvidia 8600gt for cost reasons. Also note that the ram is 2 matched sets. I have a 650watt PS (BFG) recomended by the Geek Squad at best buy that is working great.

any input will be considered but please remember that I am not rich so cost is an issue.

CRUCIAL BALLISTIX BL2KIT12864AA804 2GB KIT (1GB x 2) MATCH PAIR PC26400 800MHZ $188

Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $105

EVGA 256-P2-N755-TR GEFORCE 8600GT 256MB 128-BIT GDDR3 $130

ABIT FATAL1TY FP-IN9 SLI nVIDIA nFORCE 650 SLI $118

INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6750 (BX80557E6750) 2.66GHZ EM64T DUAL CORE $189

(windows vista home premium 64bit $105)

windows vista ultimate 64bit 1PK DVD(DSP) $179

windows XP pro sp2 64bit $140

TOTAL (w/vista ultimate 64bit) $909

If you want to play DX10 games you will need Vista, Microsoft has limited DX10 to Vista, presumably to boost sales. The 8600gt will still work under XP though.
Get a P35 based motherboard, not sure how well that E6750 will play with the 650i. The ASUS P5K series are nice but there are still some others good ones out there.

also want to know what you think of crossfiring 2 x1950 pro 256mb cards as opposed to a 8800GTS

never mind they are DX9 only

Good choice with the motherboard. I'd stick with the 8800GTS, a good gaming card.

That Crucial Ballistix RAM looks expensive when you compare it to this - even more so after rebate:

I'd say the best option for the OS is Vista Home Premium, driver support just isn't there for 64-bit XP, and Vista Ultimate is very expensive.

Don't see a hard disc or optical drive there.

actually the price I've shown is for 4gig thats two matched sets - as for the OS is there a plus to having ultimate 64bit over home premium 64bit(ignoring for now the driver issues with ultimate which should be fixed eventually) that would make it preferable on a gaming system? I have a couple lightscribe optical drives.

Basically, and I assume this holds true for 64 bit also, the general recommendation for gaming is to get Home Premium in Vista.

The higher level OS add a bunch of features that do not really provide much gaming help and cost quite a bit more. The basic is just a bit cheaper and lacks a couple of useful features. So Home Premium is recommended.
