New build
I just need some confirmations on the compatibility of the parts that i'm going to build for my dad. He's been using an incompetent computer and i thought it'd be nice to build him a new computer for his birthday so its kind of a surprise.
case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119129 hdd http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701 vid card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125036 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102084 ( which one is better ) ps http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182022 memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134045 motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131048 processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116036 ( whats the diff between dual core and pentium d? the alternative would be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116237) we're kind of on a 500 budget. the computer is mostly used for programming, i know he doesnt need a core 2 duo so i think that dual core would suffice. I'd go core 2 duo, Pentium Ds were hot and slow.
Rosewill is not a power supply you can rely on, check the recommended list for the better ones : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195 Is that Kingston ram recommended for that motherboard. You can save yourself a lot of grief by downloading the manual and only using the memory they recommend. Also, what operating system? If you're going to use Vista then 2 GB is a must ( and if your dad plays the occasional game it's still a good idea). You say it's going to be used mostly for program work but, as pointed out before, if your dad likes a game now and then get as much video card as the budget allows.

The motherboard you've chosen is compatible with either processor.
Not that 430 watt power supply. I know Cooler Master is on the approved list but you've chosen to go with a video card with 512mb of ram. |

With a few changes you could keep it just as good really:
Hard Drive - $5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148230 Case & Power Supply - This will give you a good PSU and a decent case, I recently recommended this case to a friend.. installation was a breeze. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2bsonata%2biii Other than that most people recommend LiteOn here instead of Samsung. Edit: If your interested in 2GB of ram (making his new PC more future proof) the Corsair Value Select ram would give you no problems and is compatible. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 Last edited by Devastator; 10-10-2007 at 02:52 PM. |

That case/power supply is a very nice choice.
Thanks for finding it. |

No problem. If your dad isn't going to be going into running lots of different things at once a Pentium 4 would do it, it's really how future proof and how much you want to stick to your budget. I'm still running a 2.6GHz P4 and i'm a pretty hardcore gamer and I have no problem with it.
