Mid-range gaming build
I'm looking to build a relatively inexpensive PC for gaming, but one that allows for a decent amount of future upgrade. A few components are salvaged from my existing PC which is three years old.
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33 GHz Motherboard - Asus P5N-E SLI RAM - Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDDR2 800 MHz PC2 6400 Video - XFX GeForce 8800 GTS Extreme 640 MB Sound - Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (current sound card) Hard Drive - Maxtor 80GB SATA 7200RPM (current system drive) Hard Drive - Western Digital 320GB SATA 7200RPM (current file storage drive) Optical - Hitachi 16X DVD-ROM (current optical drive) Power Supply - FSP Group Blue Storm II 500 ATX 2.2V 500W Power Supply Case - APEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower OS - Windows XP Home |

I'd replace that motherboard with a P5K and use standard CAS 5 Corsair DDR2-800 ram.

Instability, ok. Are there not any gains at all to CAS4 and higher voltages then?

Not for a mid-range gaming rig.
If you're building one of those monster over clocks that sell for 5000 USD up then maybe. But, MaximumPC earlier this year returned 5 of them to their builders ( and we're talking top end builders here ) because they wouldn't run stable. |

Oh right. Strange, because they are just as common, if not more so than CAS5 RAM on overclockers.co.uk. I guess i will scrap the OCZ Platinum RAM i had lined up and go for some CAS5 G Skill instead. Thanks for the heads up.
