CPU Fan Error message at boot

Well I finished building my first computer earlier today. Everything went up smoothly and it's running well, except for one problem: every time I boot up, at about the second black screen it gives me this error message:

"CPU Fan Error!"
"Press F1 to Resume"

So I realized that this meant that I probably didn't plug in the CPU fan input into the CPU fan output on the motherboard. Sure enough, I was right. However, I can't actually find the right input to go into the output.

I'm using an ASUS M2V-MX Motherboard, an AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU and a CG 580W Power Supply.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

if your board is M2N-MX, then from looking in the manual CPU_FAN is right next to PCI-E slot, where ASUS logo is and the board model.

Location of the CPU fan header on the motherboard is shown in the motherboard manual. It's the white 4 pin fan header near the edge of the motherboard by the memory slots.

I understand where to plug the wire into the motherboard for the CPU fan, I just cannot see or find a wire that fits into the plug.

The wires are from the CPU heatsink fan. Don't you have a heatsink/fan unit installed on your CPU?

No. I have everything installed correctly. The thing is is that there just isn't another wire that will go into the CPU fan hookup.

Are you using the stock AMD heatsink/fan or a aftermarket third party heatsink/fan?

Where do you have the heatsink fan plugged into now?

Do you have a digital camera? If you do could you take a picture of what you're dealing with and attach it to one of your posts?

There is only one set of wires from the CPU fan and they plug into the MB socket for the CPU fan so I dont understand how you can have everythhing installed correctly and not have anything plugged in. Where are the wires fromt he CPU fan/heatsink plugged in? Perhaps a picture would be the best way to figure this out.

Maybe it's the fan monitor in the BIOS

Crnotay, are you saying that your fan wire has three pins on the end instead of 4? If that's the case, the motherboard probably has a fan connection with three pins that you can use. It might be labeled chasis fan in the manual. It doesn't matter, you can use it for the processor fan. If it still tells you that there's a CPU fan error and the fan is spinning and is obviously seated correctly, it's just mad because it thinks you need to be connected to the four pin connection (it trys to monitor both fans, but one isn't there). To fix it, go into the BIOS and find the Power section. Under that, go to Hardware Monitor. Change the CPU Fan Speed to "Ignored". If your BIOS is different, just look anwhere in there for the place it monitors or controls the CPU fan and tell it to ignore it. I bet it'll show you the fan speed for the chasis fan and I bet that'll make the error message go away once you save and reboot. Note that you can sit here and watch your CPU temperature. The CPU temperature shouldn't go over 100F. Somewhere around the mid 90's is ok.
