Need help with First newbuild
The Computer will be used for graphic design work and will run Adobe programs, CAD and ARCgis programs.

I'd like to minimize costs with quality components, but i might have gone a bit overboard. Cost will be close to $1,000.00, would like less so i can get better peripherals. Please let me know if you have any suggestions/critiques. Last edited by Tigersfan; 11-04-2007 at 05:23 PM. |

I'd do a complete relook. I'd use an Asus P5K-E Wifi/AP with a Intel E6750 processor, a Corsair 2x2gb DDR2-800 ram kit, an entry level ATI FireGL or Nvidia Quadro video card, and a Corsair 450VX power supply (or an Antec Sonata 3 case with the factory PSU). I'd replace the DVD burners with Lite-Ons, one IDE and one SATA. I'd use the stock retail heatsink/fan and use the builtin wireless.
If you only want 2 gigs of ram, get a 32 bit OS - and the G.skill kit should work fine. If you insist on AMD, don't bother with a SLI board and get a wireless adapter the same brand and type as your router. |

What are the benefits of 64/32 bit OS? I figured go with 64 because it is most advanced, and don't want to have obsolete computer. That was also my thought with SLI video cards. I certainly don't require them now, but in the future I thought it would be good to have.
I also read that AMD is better for graphics, hence my leaning towards that type of processor. Thanks for the help, and hopefully more will come... |

The only benefit right now to a 64bit OS is being able to fully recognize 4GB of RAM. 32bit versions can't use more then 3.2GB. I'd stick with 32bit for simplicity's sake.
We never recommend SLI. It makes much more economic sense to buy one card and upgrade later. Adding a second card down the line never works out because by that time something new has come out that is better then your now old SLI'd setup. History has shown this is true with the past few generations of Geforce cards. Plus for your type of work, ATI's FireGL cards are specially optimized for graphic work instead of games. Check out some processor comparison benchmarks. Intel has the edge and has for awhile now.

SLI is ONLY beneficial for gaming.
