Power Management and Audio Trouble on New Build

I just completed a new build using an Intel BX975XBX MB, a 840 CPU and I'm runnnig XP. Everytihing is fine except for two problems.

The first is a power management issue. The CPU fan is always on full speed, and the system will not go into standby mode. When I click on "Start" and and "Shut Down" the only option is "Shut Down" and "Restart". The "Standby" oprtion is there, but it's grayed out.

The other iissue is that I have no sound. When I try to play a CD or M3 i get a message stating "cannot play back: no audio hardware available or it's not responding" I tried to go into the control panel under "sound and audio device" and it shows "no audio device" and all options are also grayed out.

Any advise on whether these are hardwars or software related? I assumed it was something in the BIOS, but I cold not find anything there???

Have you installed all the drivers from the Intel CD? Sounds like the chipset drivers and the onboard audio drivers are not installed. If there are any devices in Device Manager with yellow flags, this is most likely why.

Once again, you came through for me. I thought I had loaded everything, but when I tried to run everything again, the CD failed. I went out to Intel's site and wa ablke to download everything I needed. I still can't put the system in standby, but Intel's Desktop Control Center software quickly brought the CPU fan under control. Thanks for the help.

As for the standby issue, try seeing about windows updates, and if nothing, check their knowledge base.

If there are still some flagged devices, there are more drivers to install.
