Pretty Inexpensive Build...Please Check
So this computer is a christmas present for a family member. They currently have a laptop that is really slow and old, and its time for a new computer. I wanted to try to make this as inexpensive as possible but still get some performance out of it, and I didn't know which inexpensive parts to trust and not. The computer is going to be used for internet, email, and occasional picture editing, but nothing extreme.
I do have a Gateway computer that I bought last December, that just sits in my closet now as I've stripped the hard drive and the RAM and the video card from it. I was thinking, taking the motherboard out of that as well as the CPU (I don't know what kind of motherboard it is, some wierd one Gateway uses, and the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200), and then since I have the same motherboard and CPU, If I throw that all in a new case and put a new hard drive, and RAM and everything else, I should be able to reinstall Windows using the Windows Installation Disc that came with my Gateway right? that would Save me so much money, it just makes me feel a little cheap. ============================================ Case- $19.99 Rosewill R624-P Mid Tower Case http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811147062 Motherboard- $48.99 Gigabyte GA-M61SME-S2 AMD Nvidia Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813128045 PSU- $29.99 Fortron Source 350 Watt Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817104901 CPU- $49.99 AMD Athlon 64- LE 1600 2.2ghz http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103199 Memory- $22.99 Corsair ValueSelect 1GB 240 PIN DDR2 667mhz http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820146580 Hard Drive- $49.99 Western Digital Caviar 160GB 7200RPM Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822136075 Keyboard/Mouse- $29.99 Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16823126174 Monitor- $149.99 Hans G 17" Widescreen LCD Monitor http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16824254018 Optical- $22.99 Lite-On DVD player/CD burner http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106082 Operating System- $111.99 Windows Vista Home Premium OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116202 Speakers- $10.99 Logitech 4 Watt 2.0 Speakers http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16836121127 Subtotal- $547.89 Tax- $39.72 Shipping- $45.70 Total- $633.31 =================================== If I Used The Motherboard, CPU and Operating System From the Gateway (as stated above) (I just looked inside the old gateway case, everything seems salvageable, the motherboard looks almost brand new, very very little dust collection along the case and fan, but nothing on the motherboard, and the CPU is under the heatsink which doesn't have a fan, but the heatsink looks brand new too) PSU- $29.99 Fortron Source 350 Watt Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817104901 Memory- $22.99 Corsair ValueSelect 1GB 240 PIN DDR2 667mhz http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820146580 Hard Drive- $49.99 Western Digital Caviar 160GB 7200RPM Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822136075 Keyboard/Mouse- $29.99 Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16823126174 Monitor- $149.99 Hans G 17" Widescreen LCD Monitor http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16824254018 Optical- $22.99 Lite-On DVD player/CD burner http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827106082 Speakers- $10.99 Logitech 4 Watt 2.0 Speakers http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16836121127 Motherboard- $0.00 Some Motherboard That Came With a 1 Year Old Gateway Processor- $0.00 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Operating System- $0.00 Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (came with Gateway, as I'll have the same CPU and mobo is should work when I install it right?) Sub Total- $336.92 Tax- $24.43 Shipping- $41.22 Total- $402.57 ============================== If i really wanted to I could take the optical drive and power supply out of the Gateway too, but then I'd just feel really cheap. How would that computer run (both the first and the second) for basic internet, email and pictures, and should I reuse the motherboard and CPU?

I don't see why you couldn't use the old motherboard / CPU, but Cricket has a lot more experience than I do. I would definitely use that 4200+ if it is just lying around.
I know you are looking for cheap, but you can upgrade that monitor to a 19" widescreen for $15: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824254023 I don't know about gateway PSU's but if you are using onboard video or even a low end video card for this build, you can probably drop the PSU down to 300W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104951 Keep in mind that the cables are going to be short on the 300W and the 350W FSP PSU's. Personally, I like this Rosewill $21 case better because it has good ventilation in the front (looks similar to dell's current intake fan placement and case design): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147074 . If you are going to install Vista, it would be nice if you could put 2GB's of ram in the computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145098 You should be able to reuse the optical drive in the Gateway too. I don't know if the recovery disk would work, but I don't think there is any harm in trying. One other thing, does that Gateway motherboard have onboard video? If you pulled a video card out of it then I am guessing that it doesn't, which means that you need to get a low end video card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127273 ) or a motherboard with onboard video. Enjoy your build / partial build!

I just did a Xmas build for $704 shipped - but you would have to pay CA sales tax on top of it, I used Newegg.
Foxconn TS-1 Asus P5KPL-VM E2180 2x1gb Corsair VS DDR2-667 Seagate 80gb 7200.10 Lite-On retail SATA DVD burner Mitsumi combo floppy/card reader Logitech LX110 MSI wireless PCI Hanns-G HW191A (built in speakers) XP Home That will eat the system in your first post's lunch and it's very upgradeable. |

The places to look to get the price down is drop the processor down to a E2140 and drop the ram down to 1 gb (acceptable with XP but not Vista).
There are cheaper mice/keyboard wired combos, you really don't need a floppy/card reader, and you may not need a wireless card. |
