Upgrading Old Server For Fun
I am thinking about building a new computer to use as I am learning FreeBSD. I think that I might want to use the machine later as part of a home theater system. I have a CDRom player and a 100 mbit 3Com NIC. I will probably upgrade the CDRom to a DVD recorder/player in the next few months.
I have a brand new 350 Watt Antec power supply. Of course, I already own a mouse and a keyboard. What am I missing? I know that I am going cheap. Frankly, this box is just to help me learn BSD. GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H AM2 AMD 690G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - l Model #: GA-MA69GM-S2H AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Windsor 2.2GHz Socket AM2 65W Processor Model ADO4200CUBOX - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM Will I need a bigger power supply? Does anybody know anything about G. SKILL memory? (It is on sale.) I picked the Gigabyte board because it is highly rated at New Egg and because it has a HDMI connector. Has anybody heard anything bad about it? I know there are faster processors out there, but I am not going to be doing any real heavy lifting. I have also worked up an alternative Intel box without HDMI using an Intel BOXDG31PR Micro ATX Motherboard . To keep the prices comparable that box would require I use a Celeron D.

Don't use a Celeron-D, use a Celeron-L. New core technology and 800 FSB. Look at the Asus P5KPL-VM board instead of the Intel. A 350 watt Antec is fine as long as it has a 24 pin or 20+4 pin main ATX connector and a separate 4 pin CPU connector.

Thanks for the tips. I don't know why I over looked the ASUS board and the Celeron L tip was very good.
Yes the power supply has a 24 pin connector and a separate 4 pin connection. |
