Q6600 Rig, looking for help
Hi All, Im back, but this time its an Intel Rig. I broke down and went Intel.
I’d like some feedback as to was seems good and what isn’t so good for this rig. I don’t know if anyone does any video recording but I’d be interested if you guy would have a better TV tuner/ video input card that the one I could find. Will the Case be big enough to fit the Zalman 9700 HSF? I did some math and it looks like it will, but I’m not exactly good for taking guesses. no need for the aftermarket HSF if you aren't going to overclock your CPU
if not, you also won't need the thermal paste the stock heatsink already has thermal paste preapplied to it for the optical drive, stick with Lite-on, but the ASUS should work just fine all that you are missing is a PSU take a look at the Corsair 520W power supply, if you want a bit of more head room you can go with the 620 W Edit: and for you graphics card, i would try to get a hold of the 8800 GT or the superclocked version, it outperforms the GTS and comes close in benchmarks with the GTX Last edited by RazR; 11-13-2007 at 08:48 PM. |

I will be OC'in this rig,
RazR: thanks i didn't even notice that i left that out of the list, lol I must have skipped over it by accident. I have a PSU its the FSP Group FX Series FX760-E ATX12V V2.2/ EPS12V 760W Maximum Power Supply 100 - 240 V http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817104026 and GFX wise, i did add a GT to the wish list, It says that its eta is 11/19/07, i'll go with that instead of the GTS. And i was wondering about cooling for the GFX card. Any sugestions about what to use? |

Are you getting a factory OC'd card? Or do you plan on getting a stock one and OC'ing yourself?

My thoughts:
Think about getting an HDTV Tuner. I looked up how do make a custom HD antenna online and I am able to pull in all the major over the air digital channels with an antenna that cost me less than five bucks to make. Plus they are going to stop brodcasting analog channels in early 2009. I would get the 8800GT instead. It has been reviewed as better than the 8800GTS 640MB and it costs less than the 8800GTS 320MB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130301 (or you can wait until the super overclocked one comes back in stock) Four 500GB drives would be cheaper: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288 - Plus you get the 2nd generation perpendicular recording technology on the 7200.11 series drives and 32MB's of Cache per drive. $195 x 2 = 390 + 120 =$510 $125 x 4 = $500 You must have a lot of stuff to store if you are getting 2TB's of hard drive space! If you are into getting up for the day after thanksgiving sales you might be able to find 500GB hard drives quite a bit cheaper. Seagate, Western Digital, and Maxtor (now owned by Seagate, so just Seagate drives in Maxtor boxes) are the brands that most people say are good. Since you said you will be overclocking, I have read great things about the Turniq Tower CPU cooler: $45 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835154001 I don't see why you got a monitor with a digital TV tuner. I would get a regular monitor and buy a PCI or PCI-E HDTV tuner for my PC personally. You will be able to set it to record onto your hard drives automatically too. This Samsung series is nice, I have used the 19" version before: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001096 We recommend Asus P5K series motherboards. You might as well get DDR2 1066 since you want to overclock. It will give you more options when overclocking: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148070 . The Asus P5K boards support DDR2 1066 memory, I don't know if your motherboard choice does. If you don't already have that FSP PSU you can get the corsair 520W or if you want to go overboard, the 750 watter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...er+%26+Cooling (They come in red and black, you might want to sign up for newegg's newsletter (check the box when siging in) because they had a $10 off promo for newsletter people a while back and it could come back) Enjoy your build!

gtucker329: I was thinking of going stock and then OC'ing it.
andper10: I'll hold out till the 8800GT is in stock. I did change the HDD's around, thanks to your deduction, i'll start with 3x500GB Hdd's, the same ones you listed with the 32mb caches. And I think i'll hold on the 4th HDD for now. As for the TV Monitor, i have a small room, and i often watch tv and do computer work. I lack room for a decent tv, and this one is bettere than my current tv/lcd monitor. My current one can't PIP, or even cross fade. Plus I want to be able to hook up my ps2 as well. I have been looking for a good tv tuner/digital recorder for my rig. its to become the center of the rig and i have been looking for a reputable good digital tuner PCI card. I've be recomedned here for the FSP before, and from what i hear its a good PSU, and i think 760 should be enough for what I'm doing. |

For what you are building the Corsair 520W will handle it just fine, unless you plan to add a second video card down the road. I was just suggesting it becuase it is cheaper, yet still a great brand that has plenty of power for your PC. It is recommended a lot in these forums, but the FSP is still a very nice PSU, it is just that you don't need one that is that expensive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001 I guess if you are going to be storing a lot of (hd)tv on your computer, 1.5TB's of hard drive space would be useful. I have 480GB's of disk space and I could store about 450 hours of hdtv if that is all I used the hard drives for according to my TV tuner software. I don't think that overclocking your video card is necessary, but that is your choice. It should run all games on max settings stock speeds, even the non factory overclocked versions of the 8800GT's. |

andper10: What kind of tv tuner and tv tuner software do you have? I've been looking for a good one to use.
