Cheapo build for a friend
Hey folks,
My wife and I live next door to a couple who have a dying computer. We wanted to replace it for Christmas, so I went and priced out a new one. They don't need a new case, monitor or any peripherals, so really just the guts have to go. They are running a P4 Northwood on 256MB of RAM in XP Home, some old MDG machine. Anyways, the thing is getting ready to up and quit (PSU has no E number, highly unstable voltages, CPU has overheated once or twice...just a bad scene) So, they don't need anything fantastic. I'm looking at the following: CPU Mobo (ATX/mATX with onboard video) RAM PSU MAYBE a new HDD Optical Since the change will be so big, it will require a new OS as well. We are trying to keep the price below 500 CDN and get some quality parts in their hands. Any thoughts are welcome. We'll be in Vancouver during the time of ordering, so NCIX looks like a nice option to order from.

Because I'd rather get a 'quality-assured' machine that I can vouch for. Not that I don't trust Dell...
EDIT: I just put together a computer at Memory Express (local store) for 550 bucks. AMD Athlon X2 4800+ - $109.95 Asus M2NPV-VM - $89.95 Corsair XMS2 DDR2 667, 2 gigs - $64.95 250 gig Seagate Barracuda - $69.95 LG Super Multi drive - $39.95 Antec Earthwatts 380 - $49.95 XP Home SP2B - $84.95 2 year instant product replacement plan - $38.95 I think I can pair it down even more, but thats way better than anything I'll get from Dell at that price. That list is fine, but AMD systems need DDR2-800.
You could also go for an Intel setup. The Asus P5K-VM and E2160 would be a good pairing as well. Board: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...18300(ME).aspx CPU: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...17696(ME).aspx

Yeah, I knew I'd be better off with DDR2 800 as well, but it just added on to the price. I used DDR2 667 on my current AMD build until I switched over and it still did fine.
Don't get me wrong, I know that what suggested was good, I just need to see where I can cut costs. |
