Need motherboard recommendation
Hi - 1st time builder here.
I'm planning on building a system with the Intel Core2 Q6600 Quadcore chip. Money is not a big issue but I don't want to go crazy either. I do want it quiet. I'm currently running a Dell that I can hear 25 feet away. I'm not a gammer, the most demanding apps will be Photoshop CS and video editing software. I'm planning on using an Antec Sonata Plus 550 case that comes with their Neo HE550 PSU. I spent many hours researching motherboards & still don't have a clue what to use. What brands/models should I be looking at? Should I get onboard video or a separate card? I need at least one external & one internal Firewire port. If you recommend a specific board can you also suggest what memory (4gb) to get for that board. |

Take a look at the ASUS P5K motherboards...there are several models with FireWire.
I think you'll want a dedicated video card rather than on-board. I'd look at video cards with ATi GPUs, maybe the Radeon 1650 line. For RAM, look at the Corsair XMS DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) RAM Dual Channel DDR kits. Cricket

Cricket - Thanks for the quick reply. I'm off to Newegg, I'll let you know what I find.

Here's what I've come up with so far.
Can I use an IDE DVD burner or do I need to go SATA? Am I missing anything? A couple of things I see...
Looking at the specs on that board, I don't see any IDE ports so you may be stuck with SATA which isn't a bad thing since it's faster. Can someone back me up on this one? Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3500630AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM is also a HDD that has similar performance and pricing so you may want to check that out as well. Just giving you options. You may want to get a better quality PSU than the one provided with the case. I don't know how the NEO HE's fair but most PSUs that come with the case aren't worth the hassle.

Yes, the P5K-E does have one connection for an ide drive. So you can use it.
From what I've read, the power supply with that case isn't bad. It should work with that set-up. Check out this seagate drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148288 It has 32mb cache.

I added a SATA burner & dropped down to 2gb of RAM, sounds like XP wouldn't use 4gb anyway. I've never had a Western Digital hard drive fail so I'm sticking with them. The order has been placed - hopefully in time for Newegg to get it here on Friday.

Update
The case was shipped from NJ & came in just 2 days (Thursday) but the rest was shipped from TN & didn't get here till Monday. I'm sure the Christmas rush didn't help.
The build went well but I'm not sure if I have all the BIOS settings correct. If I do a cold boot XP comes up in 30 seconds or less. If I do a restart it takes at least 1.5 minutes to get back into XP. When XP was installing each restart was taking at least five minutes. Any ideas? |

Looks like I'll be returning the motherboard. Any new recommendations? How about a nice board from Intel?

Why get a new board? The P5K-E is great from all thats been said about it and I don't understand why that would be responsible of the slow restarts. I'd still put ASUS ahead of Intel boards..

What is the reason for returning the Asus motherboard?

I guess what it boils down to is everytime Windows restarts or the BIOS reboots the monitor goes into standby mode for 5 - 10 minutes before starting back up. If I get trired of waiting & hold the power button in then it displays "overclocking failed". This happens even when using the default BIOS settings.
PS - I'm not the only one having this type of problem. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/24...-randomly-post |
